Elton John Biopic, ‘Rocketman’ movie features first ‘gay male sex onscreen’ by major studio

Paramount Pictures’ R-rated “Rocketman” will be the “first major studio to depict gay male sex onscreen," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is about homosexual singer Elton John’s rise to fame. It will be distributed at cinemas throughout the United States and Canada. It features Taron Egerton as Elton John and Richard Madden, who plays as one of John’s homosexual partners.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "There were multiple scenes that included men kissing, simulated oral sex and a steamy bedroom scene with both Egerton and Madden unclothed."

"Rocketman" reportedly received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, creating hopes that producers will cash in. “Bohemian Rhapsody” depicted the life of bisexual rock star Freddie Mercury and brought in $900 million after its 2018 release. It bested, for example, “Walk the Line” and its portrayal of country crooner Johnny Cash.

However, previous movies produced or distributed by the big Hollywood studios have also featured sodomitic acts.

For example, “Call Me by Your Name” was produced by Sony Pictures and depicted a man seducing a teenage boy. The film won numerous awards, including its selection by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute as a top 10 film for 2017. “Moonlight” featured an all-black cast and depicted homo-sex exchanged by two adolescent boys. “Brokeback Mountain,” released by Focus Features, included adultery and homo-sex. Sony Pictures and Focus Features have been dubbed specialty labels in the movie industry, as opposed to Paramount, which is associated with big-ticket shows.

Also, back in the 1970s and ‘80s, films such as “Cruising,” which starred Oscar-winner Al Pacino, was produced by United Artists and featured homo-sex and a serial killer.

According to The Reporter, Egerton — who plays John — expressed surprise overreactions to the male kissing depicted in “Rocketman.”

"Everyone is obsessed with it," he said. "For me, kissing a man onscreen is no less appealing than kissing a woman onscreen. I'm not in any way repulsed by the male form. It's an uncomfortable thing regardless of who you're with — it makes no difference as to your sexual preference."

As for financial success for the biopic, Egerton said he is at peace with however much money it makes. “But I hope it does really, really well. If it made half of ("Bohemian Rhapsody"), it would be terrific for my career," he said, according to The Reporter.

Brandon Flynn is his rumored boyfriend.

I think Richard Madden is in the category of everyone knows but no on says anything yet because he has not officially come out.

Sort of like people in the biz knew Cary Grant was gay.

I would need more than that to believe it. And besides, who cares. I certainly don’t even though I’ve been posting about it.

Bruce Springsteen is much better than Elton John

Meh. Elton John is whatever he is. He's not trying to be Woody Guthrie to please the critics and his lackeys.

Judging by the posts on this thread a lot of people don’t like movies with gay people or gayness portrayed on the screen.

So yes, it is a huge factor in films.

Rocketman was passed over by many major studios for a variety of reasons that includes David Furnish and Elton wanted it to be frank about his gayness AND be rated R. Two significant factors that limits box office.

So if Richard Madden officially came out as dating Brandon Flynn it could significantly hurt his chances. Thus , perhaps, why were are seeing more talk about a Gay James Bond to test reaction.

Didn’t Colin Ferrell in “Alexander the Gay” have that scene first?

Elton John has certainly put out some great pop music, but since I saw the first trailer, I've felt this was just a cheap knockoff of Bohemian Rhapsody. Now it looks like they're trying to "out gay" BR.

Freddie Mercury being gay had nothing to do with the Bohemian Rhapsody story in and of itself. His homosexuality was just a facet of an overall tragic character.

Rocketman just looks like it's all about Elton John being gay, and who wants to see that.

I love the movie Bohemian Rhapsody because it really doesn’t push the gay lifestyle of Freddie Mercury, shows his bad times and his redemption. I’ll just watch BoRhap again instead, thanks.

Thanks for the info. I saw Bohemian Rhapsody and I thought they handled Freddie Mercury’s homosexuality fairly tastefully. Indeed, it’s unusual in that he explicitly considers a woman to be the love of his life. Complicated man.

I’m disappointed in Elton that he didn’t want to handle it in the same way, as it was in Bohemian Rhapsody. Whereas I would considering watching BR on Netflix, there’s no way now I could watch Rocketman, as much as I may have liked Elton’s early stuff.

He actually married a woman at one time, he originally claimed to be bisexual.

I’d rather watch reruns of all the Hallmark Christmas movies!

Really...how unappealing is seeing that naked little gay butterball having sex?
