Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, whose home state of Kentucky was long one of the nations leading tobacco producers, introduced bipartisan legislation Monday to raise the minimum age for buying any tobacco products from 18 to 21.
The chambers top Republican, who said he was making enactment of the bill one of my highest priorities, issued his proposal at a time when the use of e-cigarettes is growing and underage vaping has soared, raising concerns by health experts. The measure would apply to all tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vapor products and was co-sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., whose state has also been a major tobacco producer.
Kentucky farmers dont want their children to get hooked on tobacco products while theyre in middle school or high school any more than any parents anywhere want that to happen, McConnell said on the Senate floor.
Fourteen states, including Arkansas, California and Virginia, have enacted laws raising the minimum age for tobacco sales to 21, according to the anti-smoking Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. So have 470 municipalities, including New York City, Chicago, Boston and Minneapolis.

Wow great idea. Have you ever thought of running for office in DC.
Q ought to go pedal to the medal, and expose, imprison, and execute ALL of them, rather than fighting a losing battle of attrition in the shadows.
Let’s raise the age of playing in contact sports to 21.
That's right....inject nicotine straight into your system...and do it smoke free.
What a lot of cr**. Same MO as Opioids.
Will this include POT...it makes SMOKE too.
American government is absolutely worthless.
Twenty-two trillion dollars in debt and an invasion at our southern border and Cocaine Mitch is focused on taking action on teen smoking.
This is why nothing meaningful gets done on our real problems. Somewhere in this absurdity Mitch is getting a payoff.
“All the crap going on in the country and world and they’re worried about 20-year-olds smoking cigarettes. Frickin’ amazing.”
Actuarial tables and risk mitigation. Probably looking at risk of starting smoking at 21 rather than 18. This could result in lower insurance rates as well as reduced costs to medical providers.
Why not just ban it all together then?
Oh, right, they tax it to death.
Good question. At this point, his establishment machine may not be able to defend him like it did against Bevin.
