Grumpy Cat’s owner is facing a major financial loss; no insurance for 'pet influencers'

Grumpy Cat leaves behind a beloved legacy and a profitable business.

Feline celebrity Grumpy Cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, died this week due to complications from a urinary-tract infection, her owners shared Friday. The cat, who was seven years old, first rose to fame after a photo of her went viral on Reddit in 2012.

In the intervening years she has become one of the most recognizable animals in the world. As a result, she’s had marketing deals with companies ranging from Honey Nut Cheerios (GIS) and Friskies (NSRGY) cat food and starred in a television film where she was voiced by actress Aubrey Plaza. Her likeness was emblazoned on hundreds of products sold through her online shop, and she was a popular figure at fan conventions.

While her sour-puss appearance brought joy to millions of fans across the globe, her death will bring more than heartache for her owner, Tabatha Bundesen. It will also represent a major financial loss.

Pet life insurance exists, but it’s a rarely offered product and would be of little help to the owners of a famous pooch or kitty. It’s not designed to cover losses related to pets who double as income-generators for their owners.

“It’s going to be very hard,” said Loni Edwards, a lawyer and founder of The Dog Agency, a New York City-based management agency that represents pet influencers. “As these pet influencers die, there’s little you can do.” Bundesen remained tight-lipped about Grumpy Cat’s net worth over the years, aside from disputing reports that claimed the feline was worth $99.5 million.

Grumpy Cat’s owners, however, were awarded more than $700,000 after winning a lawsuit against a coffee company that breached a licensing agreement by using the cat’s likeness on more than one of its products.

Most cats who die from UTI-related maladies are not fed well. Boxed or bagged food, typically. We had two cats who my mom insisted on giving real food. Sardines, tuna, chicken, etc. One lived to 17.5, the other 22.

Yes twisted thinking for sure. Most issues are like that for the left. They fight hard against the death penalty for criminals too and yet they are determined to murder babies. They support having no children or only one because...overpopulation will ruin this country and the planet, yet support mass illegal immigration into this country. Makes zero sense, no logic to it.

IDk.

My 21-year-old polydactal refuses to eat much besides Meow Mix, mice, a few tablespoons of cream, the occasional morsel of fresh cooked chicken or beef and maybe a teaspoon or so of natural pan juice. Once in a great, great while, she’ll deign to eat a mouthful or so of some canned cat food. She still goes out and still hunts, can jump up on things.

She has hyperthyroid and gets medication daily for the past year or so. Actually, a feast of mice this winter seemed to improve her condition so much, we cut her meds back by half for several months. She even killed a large vole, but, of course, had no intention of eating it.

Our vet is amazed. His oldest feline patient to date made it to 23. We hope Smidge will get at least that old.

Pet influencers? What the hell is that?

The little cat made the owners millions by all accounts. They should have planned ahead. If they didn’t toughsky shitsky. Deal with it.

Grumpy Cat always makes me chuckle. I trust the owners are financially responsible.

Finding a fake problem with Grumpy Cat is what MSN does.

Since cats do not drink much water, and when they do they prefer it to be tasty [well-oxygenated like water found outdoors] and moving if possible ...the combination of dry food - even if of great quality- and stagnant, seldom-changed water can cause kidney/urinary problems because the cat is reluctant to drink the amount of water necessary to properly hydrate food.

You can wet the food by soaking but you would have to prepare just a little at a time so it is consumed before it spoils. But that would defeat the purpose of dry food, which is for convenience, especially if you are leaving the cat while going on vacation.
