Repeat after me. There is nothing wrong with socialism. It is just being applied incorrectly. The next time will be different.

And if you disagree with that, we’ll shoot you the first chance we get.

I wonder if Mikey's beloved Flint could learn from Venezuela?

I skimmed the entire article looking for a root cause of this crisis. All I could learn is the United States caused it and made it a lot worse than it need be.
The crisis has been compounded by American sanctions intended to force Mr. Maduro to cede power to the nation’s opposition leader, Juan Guaidó. The Trump administration’s recent sanctions on Venezuela’s state oil company have made it difficult for the government to sell its main commodity, oil. Together with the American ban on trading Venezuelan bonds, the administration has made it harder for Venezuela to import any goods, including food and medication. Mr. Maduro blames the widespread hunger and lack of medical supplies on the United States and its opposition allies — but most independent economists say the recession began years before the sanctions, which at most accelerated the collapse.

“We are fighting a savage battle against international sanctions that have made Venezuela lose at least $20 billion in 2018,” Mr. Maduro told supporters in a recent speech. “They are pursuing our bank accounts, our purchases abroad of any products. It’s more than a blockade, it’s persecution.”

“This is essentially a total collapse in consumption,” said Sergi Lanau, deputy chief economist at the Institute of International Finance, a financial trade association.

Gee, I wonder why consumption collapsed. I guess all those Venezuelans decided simultaneously to stop buying electricity, clean water, food and toilet paper. If only they could be persuaded to start consuming again.

Probably not good for the tourist trade in Cuba. Tourists don’t like to spend money to stand in line for toilet paper and they don’t like to eat rice or corn 7 days a week for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Evidently this moron author never heard of Chairman Mao.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong

Conversely, his regime has been called autocratic and totalitarian, and condemned for bringing about mass repression and destroying religious and cultural artifacts and sites. It was additionally responsible for vast numbers of deaths with estimates ranging from 30 to 70 million victims through starvation, prison labour and mass executions.[13][14]

In Venezuela, the socialist elite live like kings. They lord over the poor who prostitute themselves to eat. THIS is what the Democrats plan for the US. The Left love to see himselves as elitist lords over society.

Yep, the NYT, true to form, never mentions the "S" word. It does, however, try to implicate Trump. For a little more accurate viewpoint, HERE is a listing of current U.S. sanctions. One notices that there is indeed a sanction labeled "Targeted Sanctions Related to Antidemocratic Actions, Human Rights Violations, and Corruption" that the President did apply in 2015. The NYT artfully neglected to inform us that the President at the time wasn't named Trump.

What killed Venezuela's economy was that cornerstone of socialist dogma, state ownership of the means of production, which placed party toadies in important administrative positions whose function was to maintain the production the evil capitalists had built for them. Instead they plundered it. The rest followed as night follows the day.

This is such a sad story. I know the people fell for Chavez' offers of free everything but it's awful to see people literally starving and sitting in the dark b/c of power outages. If you haven't read Atlas Shrugged, I suggest you do it soon. Seeing the photos in the article and reading about living conditions, really reminds me of that book.
