It happened to a Boeing 737 at the Manila airport.

At the airport, as in "on the ground"? Taking off? Landing? Quite different situation.

As for fuel being ignited at a distance from a jet exhaust there are test results from that actually happening.

According to 6AL-4V, Boeing 747s have a fuel jettison system out of the back of the wings, which are much closer to the engines than would be a leaking belly tank.

How do they dump fuel in flight if that immediately causes an explosion?

And how do you personally know that an air to air rocket was fired from a boat off shore.

There would have been a lingering smokey trail of rocket exhaust and none were reported. There was no report of a red streak coming up from the sea just a red streak suddenly appearing behind the jet heading for the bottom mid-section. A rocket would have gone for the heat source, in this case the engines.

Another thing: A Missile fired at a target does not go through the target and out the other side. A proximity fuse detonates the warhead slightly before the missile 'hits' the target. This is to do more damage.

No offense, but I’m calling bullsh!t on that one. Anyone who wanted to shoot down a passenger jet flying eastbound out of JFK Airport that night wouldn’t have been positioned so far to the east where the aircraft would have usually been flying at an altitude in excess of 18,000 feet.

They would be if they wanted to get away with it.

But here’s the funny thing I’ve observed in ten years of being married to a Marine:

When Mr. Megan and his friends get together they do indeed tell a lot of embellished stories. Usually accompanied by chortles and laughter.

But as the Scotch starts to flow the stories start to get darker, many details are unspoken but acknowledged by grave references to people and places, and the technical details sometimes come out and I get glances wondering if I heard or understood something. I usually have no idea what they’re talking about.

I’ve learned a lot over the years and part of what I’ve learned is to know when they’re being serious. And one of them was involved in something to do with the TWA 800 investigation and he says he thought it was a US Navy missile because there were people in the US Navy who were acting guilty as if it was the US Navy.

He also said that he thought it was a US missile because the US missiles of the time had enough power to take down a big aircraft while the Russian missiles didn’t.

Seems a reasonable calculation to me.

Are you suggesting it is possible to fire a stinger out a 21" diameter torpedo tube the same way we launch tomahawks and harpoons? Or we modified a VLS tube to fit a tiny stinger?

Or are you saying the submarine surfaced and some dude dragged the launcher up the hatch and shot down an airliner on purpose?

I remember several things. The guy who headed up the investigation announced the results of the investigation before it started. The people taking part in the investigation were not allowed to talk to each other or anyone else... the “anyone else” I understood, not being allowed to talk to each other made no sense. Except, that they had a predetermined outcome and would not take any chances on anyone disputing it.

There were 130 people that saw a missile. Some of the witnesses went to the FBI and they refused to interview them, or interviewed them taking no notes.

There was a big Navy exercise the night of the shoot-down. This suggested to me that they had some intel about what was going to happen and were trying to prevent it.

I seem to remember another plane blew up a short time later, also in New York, shortly after take-off, but still low to the ground.
