Along the Black River in North Carolina, bald cypress trees have been quietly growing for millennia. Quite literally so: Scientists recently found trees over 2,000 years old - including one that is at least 2,624 years old.
Another nearby tree was found to be 2,088 years old - and geoscientists believe that more bald cypresses (Taxodium distichum) in the Three Sisters Swamp could be the same age or even older.
Surprisingly, a tree named BLK227 was found to be at least 2,624 years old. That makes it a seedling or sapling in 605 BCE - a timeframe that predates the Roman Empire by centuries, and the year Nebuchadnezzar II ascended to the throne of Babylon.

The sentence about the Aspen trees sprouting from a root network that is 80,000 years old got my attention.
What’s with Cypress trees that makes them survive this long? I thought the Cypress trees at Caddo Lake, TX (400-600 years old) was amazing... but >2,600 years old. Wow.

These reported ages are very suspect. There is no way they can accurately determine the age of trees by an increment core. Many times a tree may put on two or three increments in one year caused by drastic weather changes. A small portion of the trunk will put on extra “ half” years, only half way around the trunk because a stress exerted on the tree. Without seeing the full disc at multiple heights can a reasonable age be determined. A conservatory would be more incline to give a high age to claim a need to preserve the area.

A swamp is a wetland that is forested. Many swamps occur
along large rivers where they are critically dependent upon
natural water level fluctuations. Other swamps occur on the
shores of large lakes.
Just think of this tree in relation to when Columbus sailed
the ocean 1492.
When I was a kid, it was common to see lamps made from cypress knees. Haven’t seen one in a long time.

The University of Arizona’s Laboratory of Tree Ring Research explains:
Ring-counting does not ensure the accurate dating of each individual ring. Numerous studies illustrate how ring-counting leads to incorrect conclusions drawn from inaccurate dating. Dendrochronologists demand the assignment of a single calendar year to a single ring. Various techniques are used to crossdate wood samples to assure accurate dating.

I think back in the 50s, people used cypress knees because they could not afford more expensive ones.
