Murphy Brown Cancelled at CBS

Breaking news, and it’s not good: CBS has cancelled the revival of Murphy Brown after one season, TVLine has learned.

Candice Bergen returned to the title role that won her five Emmys during the show’s original 1988-98 CBS run, with series creator Diane English back as showrunner. The revival also brought back original cast members Joe Regalbuto (Frank Fontana), Faith Ford (Corky Sherwood) and Grant Shaud (Miles Silverberg), and added Jake McDorman as Murphy’s son Avery — now a reporter for the rival Wolf network — Tyne Daly as bar owner Phyllis and Nik Dodani as social media whiz Pat.

But after debuting to a 1.1 demo rating, Murphy went fractional just three weeks in. Over its 13-episode revival run, which wrapped up in December, it averaged a 0.84 in the demo — ranking last among CBS’ eight sitcoms — and 6.1 million total viewers, where it outdrew Fam, Man With a Plan and Happy Together. (The veteran cast surely didn’t come cheap, either, so CBS couldn’t be happy to keep shelling out big bucks for its lowest-rated comedy.)

The Eye network has also axed sitcom Life in Pieces after four seasons, along with freshman comedies Happy Together and Fam.

TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Will you miss Murphy taking shots at Donald Trump? Share your reaction to the cancellation in a comment below.

THe show was terrible 30 years ago, I can’t imagine it got any better with time.

“Life in Pieces” cancelled also. Looks like Tom Hanks will be pulling Hollywood strings to get his Dorky Son a new gig.

I don’t watch much TV, so when I saw your headline, I thought to myself “Is that show STILL ON?”

I didn’t realize it ran 1988-98. Never saw a single episode, just like so many other shows (Seinfeld, Cheers, etc).

...And Candace Bergman can’t even speak clearly anymore.

‘Fam’ was awful. It starred a women from Canada/Bulgaria who married a black guy who she had zero chemistry with and then have her 16 year old step sister who is a criminal move in and their absent father shows up as well along with.... a gay guy. Paint by numbers show.

I figured Nina Dobrev, who is easy to look at, only did the show to be seen after she quit her other show ‘Vampire Diaries which I guess was popular. Vampires? eh.

#46 yeah that last season of the Andy Griffith show where he started taking bribes and Barney was paid off by the sisters making moonshine and Opie selling drugs in high school.
Just wasn’t the same show I remember.

I watched a few episodes. They soft-pedaled their TDS, but suffered from what most other sit-coms suffer from -— unimaginative, unfunny writing. For every Seinfeld, there are thousands of “2 Broke Girls.”

“But they renewed that Conners crap.”

I was just wondering about that same thing. Sometimes I see the old shows, and they were pretty good. Without Roseanne, I don’t think it has a good chance. But I could be wrong.

I was not very interested in seeing it but when the blonde nitwit gushed about how Murphy spoke "her truth" I lost any interest I might have had.

When someone starts talking about "their truth" they are getting ready to deny reality.
