Breaking news, and its not good: CBS has cancelled the revival of Murphy Brown after one season, TVLine has learned.
Candice Bergen returned to the title role that won her five Emmys during the shows original 1988-98 CBS run, with series creator Diane English back as showrunner. The revival also brought back original cast members Joe Regalbuto (Frank Fontana), Faith Ford (Corky Sherwood) and Grant Shaud (Miles Silverberg), and added Jake McDorman as Murphys son Avery now a reporter for the rival Wolf network Tyne Daly as bar owner Phyllis and Nik Dodani as social media whiz Pat.
But after debuting to a 1.1 demo rating, Murphy went fractional just three weeks in. Over its 13-episode revival run, which wrapped up in December, it averaged a 0.84 in the demo ranking last among CBS eight sitcoms and 6.1 million total viewers, where it outdrew Fam, Man With a Plan and Happy Together. (The veteran cast surely didnt come cheap, either, so CBS couldnt be happy to keep shelling out big bucks for its lowest-rated comedy.)
The Eye network has also axed sitcom Life in Pieces after four seasons, along with freshman comedies Happy Together and Fam.
TVLines Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Will you miss Murphy taking shots at Donald Trump? Share your reaction to the cancellation in a comment below.
There were two 90s shows that I hated when I first saw them. “Babylon 5” and “Lexx.” But after being able to watch several episode at once, they became my favorites.
Cool! I successfully avoided the original series and the second series. They should bring it back one more time so I can ignore it then for the hat trick.
Watched a few of the first run and two of my favorite characters, Eldin and Phil, both died in real life.
I did give the new one a chance. Was a waste of time.
Donate to Free Republic and share some popcorn with President Trump!
Thank goodness someone put it out of our misery.
Most of the renewed/revised/resurrected shows from bygone eras are more misses than hits. The networks have force-renewed some for an additional season or two.
What??? A tired, laughably outdated sitcom featuring has-been “stars” and cliched story lines didn’t top the charts???? How could THAT be? I mean, they bashed Trump, didn’t they? What’s not to like?
Breaking news and its great. Washed up liberal show fails.
I tuned in to watch the first episode because at one point it was a well-written show.
Then, Hillary! appeared. OMG! Turned it off and I’ve never turned the TV back on to CBS, since!
I was horrified and scarred for LIFE, LOL!
Its not good news....its GREAT!!
My heart is breaking, I’m verklempt~!
It sucked before, it sucks now, it'll suck next week...did I mention it sucked?
Oh No!
and its not good news
The number of Murphy Brown fans could
share one booth at the local DENNY’S. With room for the homeless bum to join them.
Wouldn’t surprise me if the new regime at Fox picks up the show...
I never cared for Matlock either.
