Breaking news, and its not good: CBS has cancelled the revival of Murphy Brown after one season, TVLine has learned.
Candice Bergen returned to the title role that won her five Emmys during the shows original 1988-98 CBS run, with series creator Diane English back as showrunner. The revival also brought back original cast members Joe Regalbuto (Frank Fontana), Faith Ford (Corky Sherwood) and Grant Shaud (Miles Silverberg), and added Jake McDorman as Murphys son Avery now a reporter for the rival Wolf network Tyne Daly as bar owner Phyllis and Nik Dodani as social media whiz Pat.
But after debuting to a 1.1 demo rating, Murphy went fractional just three weeks in. Over its 13-episode revival run, which wrapped up in December, it averaged a 0.84 in the demo ranking last among CBS eight sitcoms and 6.1 million total viewers, where it outdrew Fam, Man With a Plan and Happy Together. (The veteran cast surely didnt come cheap, either, so CBS couldnt be happy to keep shelling out big bucks for its lowest-rated comedy.)
The Eye network has also axed sitcom Life in Pieces after four seasons, along with freshman comedies Happy Together and Fam.
TVLines Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Will you miss Murphy taking shots at Donald Trump? Share your reaction to the cancellation in a comment below.
B5 was a favorite from the beginning.
About time. I thought they had all ready done this.
Matlock was popular with people over 80.
Wow. That show disappeared faster than Murphy Brown’s baby.
Perry Mason was and still is my favorite lawyer show.
I was born in 71.
For some reason, even then, I did not care for Andy Griffith.
My guess is that I caught one of the less poplar episodes first. One that didn’t make much sense without the backstory from previous episodes.
CBS can't interest me in their network even when they cancel a program a second time.
I want to see Charlie McCarthy and Candice Bergen together older, as spiteful siblings.
“Dad always liked you best”
Unwatchable.
B5 is one where the pilot movie sets up much of the series arc.
and then we have
Constance Wu tweets she’s ‘so upset’ after Fresh Off the Boat renewal news: ‘F-—ing hell’

Constance Wu does not seem pleased her ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat has been renewed for a sixth season.
Shortly after news broke of the renewal on Friday, the Crazy Rich Asians star tweeted a cryptic expression of anger (that has been edited by EW for profanity): So upset right now that Im literally crying. Ugh. [F]
Adios Candace and Company!
I suggest a sitcom titled Make America Great Again! Watch those ratings explode!
Maybe she had a potential movie role lined up that conflicts with the show’s schedule.
In their world of course that means it's all Trump's fault.
I wish that Dan Quayle would have served more years in elective office.
I guess his time has passed (age-wise), but it would be great if he ran for Senator from Arizona next year.
He’s a solid conservative and so much better than McSally for the seat formerly held by McShame.
Quayle lives in Paradise Valley BTW.
They say this like its a bad thing.
