The true story of the Chicken Gun. Too funny not to share! Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist!
Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch standard 4 pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.
WHEN THE GUN WAS FIRED, THE ENGINEERS STOOD SHOCKED AS THE CHICKEN HURLED OUT OF THE BARREL, CRASHED INTO THE SHATTERPROOF SHIELD, SMASHED IT TO SMITHEREENS, BLASTED THROUGH THE CONTROL CONSOLE, SNAPPED THE ENGINEER'S BACK-REST IN TWO, AND EMBEDDED ITSELF IN THE BACK WALL OF THE CABIN, LIKE AN ARROW SHOT FROM A BOW.
THE HORRIFIED BRITS SENT NASA THE DISASTROUS RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT, ALONG WITH THE DESIGNS OF THE WINDSHIELD AND BEGGED THE U.S SCIENTISTS FOR SUGGESTIONS.

Had to go back to the dealer yesterday because I couldn’t get the radio to work.
The service technician explained that the radio was voice-activated.
”Nelson,” the technician said to the radio.
The radio replied, “Ricky or Willie?”
”Willie,” he continued, and “On The Road Again” flowed from the speakers.
Then he said, “Ray Charles,” and in an instant “Georgia On My Mind” replaced Willie Nelson.
I drove away so happy, and for the next few days every time I’d say, “Beethoven” I’d get beautiful classical music, and if I said, “Beatles” I’d get one of their awesome songs.
Well, yesterday, this woman ran a red light and nearly smashed into my new truck, but luckily I swerved in time to avoid her. I yelled at her, “Crazy Bitch!”
The radio replied, “Hillary, Maxine, Kamala, Warren, Ocasio, or Pelosi?”

If you ever hit a bird in flight as the PIC it is quit an experience. I hit one and it put a huge dent in the wing near the root. The C-172 took it in stride.

AT P&W we mainly worried about fan blade damage, big nicks could throw the fan and shaft out of balance and stress or destroy the bearings. By the fourth stage of the Low Pressure compressor any bird was shredded and ready for barbecue sauce. It would be cooked on the way out of the turbine, at about 2000 degrees.

Why aren’t intakes covered in a mesh screen?
I never hit a bird yet, but I did get stuck in a swarm of butterflies for about 50 mile one day, all the way up to 12,000 feet, Completely covered the front window of my 172 and we were looking through small clear patches on the window to land. Pretty Wild.

2 reasons. It interferes with air flow. It can also get sucked into the engine if for some reason it fails.

Because a goose at 200 knots has more KE than a 30/06 bullet and would push the mesh and itself into the intake anyway.
Do you remember if your butterflies were orange, yellow, white or indeterminate? Monarchs are the best known migrators, but some others and some large dragon flies go south for the winter. Most would be on the move in Sept & October.
On occasion, here in Illinois, the media will report butterfly migrations picked up on radar.
