Is white bread about to make a comeback on school lunch menus?
After complaints about taste and costs, the Trump administration rolled back a rule that required foods like pasta and bread be made with whole grains. The cafeteria directors who lobbied for the change say they just want greater flexibility to serve foods like white bread which are more processed and have less fiber when whole grains dont work.
In Vermont, the relaxed rule means white rice will be served with beans again. In Oregon, macaroni and cheese may return. And in South Dakota, students may notice a change with their soup.
The staff asked right away, Oh my God, can we go back to the other saltines? said Gay Anderson, a school lunch director and president of the School Nutrition Association, which represents cafeteria operators and suppliers like Dominos and Kellogg.
The rollback addresses rules on grains, milk and salt championed by former first lady Michelle Obama.

Orowheat makes a rye bread with dill in it.
OMG it is sooooo good.
The perfect flavor for a sammich on a sweltering day.
I’m not crazy about sammiches but I’ll make one just so I can eat that bread.
My favorite is ham and cheese on rye with provolone, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard and pickles.
Where the hell is there school lunch anymore ?
My kids eat what we send them with
Our lunch ladies (no offense intended snowflakes, that’s what they were, ladies) did a pretty good job making lunch when I was in school.
My earliest memories in Kindergarden, was the Milkman (no offense intended snowflakes, that’s what they were, men) would push a handtruck in with those half-pint containers of milk. I think they were a nickle. Most of us opted for Chocolate Milk. Milk is good for you. Chocolate is good for you. Cholesterol is critical for growing children. Heart disease isn’t happening with 5 year old folks. I walked home for lunch in Kindergarden, about a block. Mom would have some tomato soup ready for me, something like that.
The lunches in Grade School and beyond weren’t too bad all things considered. We complained, what else is new. Many of the ingredients were Government surplus staple items donated or purchased at reduced prices. I recall Chili, Peanut Butter sandwiches, soups, pizza, tacos, hamburgers, etc. Nutritious with lots of food value. Cafeteria service is hard work, and probably a thankless job.
What I don’t understand, why is the Executive Office getting involved in children’s lunch menus in the first place? Crazy.
Wonder Bread’s motto used to be
“Great for building young bodies.”
Steve Allen said, “Good. Build me a young blonde.”
When buying other than white bread, my family ALWAYS ( as I and the progeny do )bought other kinds of bread from a good bakery.
It’s insane all this cow towing to what kids get to eat at school. If you don’t like your kid eating at school pack their lunch for crying out loud!
As an infant, I got a case of the rickets. So Mom and I would eat peanut butter from table spoons. No bread. Just peanut butter. I’m surprised I still like it. LOL
I did the same for the progeny ( until middle school ) and also for day camp.
LOL...sometimes I still do eat peanut butter with a spoon. ;^)
Who in the hell elected Michael Obama to any office anyway? How she had any say in school lunches is mystifying, especially when the hypocrite’s daughters were not forced to eat the slop.
Well, I’m still sort of bow-legged, but in Texas everyone is. LOL
Oh my God, can we go back to the other saltines?
Mmmmmmm.
White supremacist bread.

Cafeteria service is hard work, and probably a thankless job.
The only bread I eat is fresh made Publix deli subway bread.
