Our lunch ladies (no offense intended snowflakes, that’s what they were, ladies) did a pretty good job making lunch when I was in school.

My earliest memories in Kindergarden, was the Milkman (no offense intended snowflakes, that’s what they were, men) would push a handtruck in with those half-pint containers of milk. I think they were a nickle. Most of us opted for Chocolate Milk. Milk is good for you. Chocolate is good for you. Cholesterol is critical for growing children. Heart disease isn’t happening with 5 year old folks. I walked home for lunch in Kindergarden, about a block. Mom would have some tomato soup ready for me, something like that.

The lunches in Grade School and beyond weren’t too bad all things considered. We complained, what else is new. Many of the ingredients were Government surplus staple items donated or purchased at reduced prices. I recall Chili, Peanut Butter sandwiches, soups, pizza, tacos, hamburgers, etc. Nutritious with lots of food value. Cafeteria service is hard work, and probably a thankless job.

What I don’t understand, why is the Executive Office getting involved in children’s lunch menus in the first place? Crazy.

My SIL is a cook at a public school. She makes a decent wage, but the real money is in the medical coverage. They seem to have all the thanks they need.
