Bambang Brodjonegoro said President Joko Widodo had chosen to relocate the capital in "an important decision"... Jakarta, home to over 10 million people, is sinking at one of the fastest rates in the world...
Researchers say that large parts of the megacity could be entirely submerged by 2050. North Jakarta sunk 2.5m (eight feet) in 10 years and is continuing to sink an average of 1-15cm a year...
But President Joko Widodo has achieved ambitious infrastructure building in his five years in office, so he may well be the man that finally does it.

All necessitated by global warming and Trump.
Oh that’s OK...Indonesia’s favorite son walks on water...
“...moved their capital to closer to the centre of the country...”
The problem is Jakarta was built on a swamp.
Still, it's hard to believe they'd move the capital out of Java, where most of the people live.
They’ll just have the same problem wherever they set up the new capital.
The only answer is for the Indonesians living in the capital city to simply stop using water.
Instead of drinking water pumped from underground, they can drink bottled soda. That’s what makes Americans so big and strong, after all.
Instead of using water pumped from underground for landery and bathing, they can just rub dirt on it. Worked for our ancestors for thousands of years and they did ok.
If anyone can get the job done, it is Jokowi. I don’t think I’ve seen a man quite as popular or as able. This includes Pak Suharto.
Virginia moved its capital from Jamestown to Williamsburg and later to Richmond. I think Georgia and Tennessee both moved the location of their state capitals. Alaska was going to move its capital from Juneau to someplace more accessible (between Anchorage and Fairbanks) but that never materialized. There are probably some other states which moved their capital at some point in their history.
WV from Wheeling to Charleston back to Wheeling then back to Charleston!
The DuPage county seat moved back and forth, the last time at midnight.
“In 1857, the Illinois state legislature authorized an election to be held to decide the question of whether the DuPage county seat should remain in Naperville or be moved to the more centrally located Wheaton...
. Naperville won the election by a vote of 1,542 to 762. Hostility between the two towns continued for the next decade and another election was held in 1867, in which Wheaton narrowly won by a vote of 1,686 to 1,635.
animosity between the two towns continued, and in 1868, as records were moved from the old Naperville courthouse to the new one in Wheaton, Naperville refused to turn over the remaining county records, prompting a band of Civil War veterans from Wheaton to conduct what came to be known as the “Midnight Raid” on the Naperville courthouse.”

This is such a crazy non sequitor, I really don’t know where to begin. Yes, Canberra is (sorta) mid-way between Sydney & Melbourne. But it was that way from the beginning. Canberra didn’t move from one designated location to another. Its always been where it has been. But hey? What do I know, I only lived there for 13 years.
They could save themselves a bunch of money and stop extracting water from the aquifers beneath Jakarta. But that would be too easy. Big government initiatives provide big opportunities for graft.
The state of Iowa saw its capitol move from Butlington to Iowa City to, finally, Des Moines...
“Bambang Brodjonegoro ...” Awesome name?
Oh? I thought it was an onomatopoeia?
Interesting piece of local history. Not many folks know that.
