"Avengers: Endgame" (Thoughts with no spoilers)
self | 4/29/2019 | LS

Posted on 04/29/2019 7:08:43 AM PDT by LS

I promise, I won't give away any details or main plot twists. My take on the movie? Meh.

As a wrapup, it definitely did the job, tying up---for good or bad---virtually all of the character lines.

As an action pic it was ok. There was as much if not more humor in this than others. Something about it just didn't work for me.

Again---and this is predictable so I'm not giving anything away---at the end of "Infinity Wars," the "SNAP" caused 1/2 of the universe to disappear. The film begins years later as the Avengers, like everyone else, is trying to cope with the loss of loved ones.

Part 1 is the Avengers getting the will and the plan to combat the "SNAP."

Part 2 is them achieving the means.

Part 3 is the expected battle.

Josh Brolin stole "Infinity Wars" by being somewhat altruistic. Like any good totalitarian dictator, he can fix all problems if he has infinite power. His sadness and (apparently genuine) despondency over the burden of doing this came through and drove the character. That largely disappears in "Endgame," where he becomes what all dictators are, impetuous, unchecked, lacking any moral compass save his own.

One good device the plot uses is to divide up the very large heroic cast into several smaller teams, which is always good to watch different heroes interact with each other. The addition of "Captain Marvel" is handled well.

Just one note on the final battle: It's as if Thanos all of a sudden forgets he has the stones (literally) especially space and time and power. He's like Muhammad Ali drawn into the middle of the ring to trade punches with George Foreman. Ain't a winning strategy.

Despite the attempts to make Robert Downy, Jr. the star, Chris Hemsworth again emerges as the most likeable character. Not nearly as much of the "Guardians" as I'd like.

I will spoil this one minor scene because it shows the current makeup of Hollywood: during the first act when all are depressed, repressed, suppressed, oppressed, sittin' on the Group W. bench (as Arlo Guthrie used to sing), Tony Stark is leading a therapy group. One guy says, "I wasn't able to date for 2 years. I finally went on a date." Stark: "What did you talk about?" Him: "Well, we talked about the disappearances, then HE started to cry, then . . . ." Sigh.

So the insertion of homosexuality into a scene were it was absolutely not necessary whatsoever is just one more reminder that Hollywood's homosecual community can inject gay-ism into a rock.

Watch it. His screen time is perhaps less than 1 minute total.

Well, no that’s not a spoiler. It’s been revealed in every single review out there already.

Yes. Know exactly what you mean. Loved that scene.

Yes. My theory of all superhero groups (and why Superman was terrible in Justice League) was that each had a couple of really good powers, but nothing overwhelming, and that to defeat the enemy they had to always work together.

(The great exception was the final scene in “Age of Ultron” where they all were just blasting away).

When you insert someone too powerful-—Superman, or Captain Marvel-—you do away with the dynamic of having to rely on others.

Yeah, sorry, Evans.

I get the group therapy. I did not like the gratuitous insertion of the homosexual theme.

Now, any other corrections?

The only other PC moment that really struck me, was the gratuitous "Girl Power" scene in the final battle, at least they didn't completely overdue that one, but there was absolutely no way in some huge battle that all the gals would suddenly get together for one attack.

One commentor made the point: why didn’t Fury summon Marvel during the alien invasion in Avengers #1?. She could have stopped the invasion, taken out Thanks before he had any stones, and eliminated any need for any of the other Avengers to do anything.

That’s the problem with a Superman equivalent. There’s no need for anyone else.

How is this movie (the entire genre) so popular? What does it speak to that resonates with some many?

You got me. Comic book movie with comic book characters. I would rather watch something more real-world based. One could argue that movies are by definition escapism, so the Marvel movies simply take it to another level. Doesn't interest me though.

Right. Good point.

I thought Captain Marvel was the weakest of any character except Black Panther. But in this case, the movie needed her.

My theory is that they are the only movies that have a theater experience that exceeds what you can get from Home.

A movie not full of special effects is probably better enjoyed at home than in a theater, so people tend to eschew going to the theater to see those movies.

Superman and Green Arrow

There's a Green Arrow? What's a Green Arrow? Do the Green Arrow, Green Lantern and Green Hornet tell kids to recycle their used weapons?

Same reason that people have always told tales of heroes. From Beowulf and Hercules to Robin Hood and Ivanhoe to 3 Musketeers and Tale of Two Cities to Cowboys and Space Rangers and Super Heroes.

They embody what we believe is best in us. They show that we all have flaws but can rise above and succeed. That we can defend what we believe and protect others while still being imperfect.

There has been a trend for years to move toward the darker more ‘realistic’ characters and plots. The introduction of anti-heroes etc.

I firmly believe that the reason Marvel has done such a better job in the box office is they didn’t go major dark where DC has. They kept some humor n the films true, but more importantly they kept the ideals in place of what we expect in heroes - what we can achieve when we are the best of us.

I haven’t seen the movie yet - so I won’t be reading any further comments. Have to wait till my girls are back from college next week.

I agree, comic book movies are good enough for entertainment if you just want to zone out for a couple hours. But I watched the dark comedy "The Death of Stalin" the day after seeing Endgame, I enjoyed it much more. You find yourself laughing at the antics of these men as they via for power, then feel guilty because it is essentially historically correct and millions were dying as they plotted against each other.

There’s always been a big market for exploitation movies. They are specifically built to give the audience what they want out of a movie. Some conflict, some escapist fun, expected beats. It used to be they were low budget, but almost always profitable. Then the summer blockbuster got invented. Now they are the tent poles that hold up the industry. All the comic book movies are is another form of exploitation movie.

Already broke my rule and read all the comments....sigh..

Green Arrow has been around since the 40s. Basically an expert archer with gimmick arrows that pre-dates Marvel’s Hawkeye.

Backstory is he was stranded on an island and developed the archery as a way to survive. There’s been a running TV show the past 5 years that was ok the first few seasons on CW.

Non-spoilers to know about the movie...

1. No reason to watch the credits at the end. It's 9 minutes of 4000 names, and no Easter egg.

2. Infinity War was a better movie overall.

3. Brie Larson / Captain Marvel is rather snotty when in character as well. (I'm saving 1000 other worlds, you guys are all just saving this one.)

4. The heroes desperately fight to restore their reality/timeline/whatever, while making sure to not disrupt other reality/timeline/whatevers... entirely skipping the notion that every one of those others will end very badly, as the bad guy does his thing in every other instance. Apparently, only OUR reality matters, and nobody in or out of the film seems to care or notice.

5. There's a hyper-gratuitous "Girl Power" moment that just feels way over-the-top, but will likely make your gal squeal for a moment.

6. Thor... easily one of the best visual humor moments of the entire mega-saga...

7. The real spoilers are actually not THAT huge. Had someone told me the biggest ones before going in, it wouldn't have destroyed the film overall. There are no shockers like "Bruce Willis was dead all along" or "Vader is Luke's father". It's heroes vs badguys with a big battle scene, as is virtually every Marvel movie in this run.

I believe it was Steve Rogers leading the talk group. I said to my son , “Rogers is talking about how we have to rebuild the world. How are fags going to help rebuild the world?”
