Goin to Orlando Next Week - Need Travel Advice
4/19/19 | MplsSteve

next week, the wife and I are taking our 10-yr old great niece to Orlando. Yes (sigh), we are spending several days at Disneyworld. Due to someone on the inside, we were able to get great rates for admission and overnight.

One day, we're going to Canaveral National Seashore. Yes, we're gonna avoid the nude beaches. No one should ever see me naked and frankly if some weirdo even looks at my great niece...well, you get the idea.

So what else do Freepers like in the Orlando area? Is Gatorland worth it? Or maybe Discovery Cove? I'm not sure we're gonna have time for SeaWorld or to drive west to Busch Gardens in Tampa.

Would love to go to Kennedy Space Center - but with the reat-nice, I'm gonna have to take a pass on it this time.

Are there places I should avoid? I've heard that certain parts of Orlando are kinda scary.

Are there any good restaurants? Me? I love Bob Evans, Shoney's, Waffle House, etc. The wife and great-niece are pretty flexible too.

I'd appreciate any reasonable suggestions.

The spouse and I are going to Epcot in about 10 days. I like to visit the countries and walk around drinking a beer.

Check the weather report before you go and dress and pack appropriately.

If you must travel on DIE-4, be careful, it’s being reconstructed. I swear I will never again complain about NYC traffic.

You can get some fantastic pics of exotic wildlife.

I would suggest the local Wal-Mart.

Vito’s Chop House. A bit pricey, but great steak.

Been going to Sea World for 40 years. Not a big fan of the Space Center although I have access the the Space & Air Museum in DC area so I can see one of the Space Shuttles for free. There is also Universal Studios. There are two parks prefer the Islands of Adventure section. If you want to go to a place to shop and dine Disney Springs is nice although can get crowded.

The areas around the parks are fine. They are filled with hotels and restaurants.

One fast food place I love to go to in Florida is "Pollo Tropical". It is a Caribbean flavored chicken chain.

Eat a HUGE CARB-FILLED BREAKFAST before you go! Waffles pancakes at Waffle House or IHOP! They Key is ENERGY!

That way you will not get hungry during the day, and have to buy the waaay overpriced food they sell in Disneyworld. Also you’ll have more time to get on the best rides.

Be the FIRST AT THE GATES WHEN THEY OPEN! Less crowds on the good rides then. Get a MAP, Plan your attack! Don’t wander around aimlessly!

Stay out of the gift shops until the end of the day! That way you won’t be lugging around the junk all day!

I have been there 6 times! I know what I’m talking about!

Try UNIVERSAL STUDIOS NEXT DAY. SAME PLAN!....................

You can’t go wrong by going to Medieval Times in Kissimee, just west of Orlando. Great dinnertime entertainment and eats for young and old!

Some people like Universal as much as Disney. Magical Midway go-karts, arcade, etc on Int’l Drive is cheap, and “The Wheel” ferris wheel can be a cool way to see the city.

That is the family plan of attack. The only time the wife and kids will get up early is to hit Disney; we are there from opening to closing.

I don’t know if they search people now, I heard they don’t allow big ‘purses’. We used to hide a few Snickers bars in them...................

One think I would plan is if you are going to hit multiple parks check the schedules. The hours can vary by park and day of the week. We would schedule to say hit Epcot when it was open late. Then hit Animal Kingdom because that usually closes earlier at 6 pm or 8 pm to get a good night’s sleep before a 12+ hour day at Magic Kingdom.

If you get a chance at the magic kingdom, take the monorail to the Polynesian resort and get a lapu lapu drink at the Tambu Lounge!
