If the name was “so offensive’ then why did CNN spell it out?
Should have written Runaway N— Creek.

We have a mountain in Western Maryland called ‘Negro Mountain’. The name actually commemorates the heroism of a Black man. They’ve tried to change it a couple of times, but it’s never passed - even some Black historians objected:

The original name dates back to at least the Civil War, when it's believed escaped slaves from a nearby plantation would swim across the creek to freedom on islands controlled by Union troops, CNN affiliate WJCL reports. So, Runaway Negro Creek is an affirmative name, rather than a negative one, but everything is equally offensive nowadays.

CNN is so offensive they only use initials.
Mostly that they claim to be “news”.

Outside of Austin, TX, there used to be a creek that was known as “N——r Creek”. It was named that because you followed it to find “N——r Cemetery”. Both were renamed decades ago.

Wow, USGS has already updated their information and there's ZERO mention of the creek's original name in the "History" section:
History: Named by Georgia Senate Resolution 685 in 2018 because the stream was reportedly used by enslaved people to escape to freedom.
It DOES show up under "Variant Names" as "Runaway Negro Creek." Feature Detail Report for: Freedom Creek
Down the memory hole with you, Runaway Negro Creek.

When I was young, we stocked N*****head Oysters at our store. They sold well, to folks of all races. They changed the name to Negrohead Oysters in the ‘60’s, I think.

Well, I can kind of see that. Its sort of a glib-sounding name, like its funny. At least its not a big river that everyone knows except the locals.

There was a "Ni**erhead Creek" in the Cascades, Washington State which was a slang term for a steam powered logging winch - we used to hunt nearby. It was changed to Yellowjacket Creek back in the 60's.
There was also a "Bear sh*t Lake" near the Olympic Mountains and was labeled on the map as such. I think it's been changed also.

I’m offended every time I see product labels stating “negro” in Spanish. These products should no longer be sold or should be painted a different color.

Jefferson Mountain in NC used to be called n_gger head mountain and was renamed when the area became a state park in 1952.
I guess Jefferson’s dalliance with Sally Hemings wasn’t well known then.
