Georgia Engel, whose distinctive voice and pinpoint comic timing made her a memorable part of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, on which she played Georgette Franklin, girlfriend and eventually wife of the buffoonish TV newsman Ted Baxter, died on Friday in Princeton, N.J. She was 70.
John Quilty, her friend and executor, said the cause was undetermined because Ms. Engel, who was a Christian Scientist, did not consult doctors.
Ms. Engel was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on Mary Tyler Moore, which she joined in 1972, during the shows third season.

She was a hoot as Amy’s ultra religious Mother on Everybody Loves Raymond. The scene when she sneaks out in the early AM to have a smoke and runs into Robert having a smoke as well was a classic. ( Both were hiding their smoking habit)
She was a master of deadpan
Olivia de Havilland’s got almost a decade on her pushing 103.
RIP.
Very funny actress.
RIP.
Rest In Peace, Mrs Ted Baxter. What a funny lady...
Once Rhoda left, Georgette was my favorite character on MTM.
It was funny then, probably not now, the crappy way Ted Baxter treated Georgette. Bob Newhart treated Suzanne Pleshette just as shabbily and we cracked up. of we even noticed. Archie Bunker was a little too on the nose, though.
And Rhoda, who did consult with doctors when she got brain cancer several years ago and wasn’t given very long to live, is still with us, and has outlived both Mary Tyler Moore and Georgette.
Here ya go (5 second mark)- you’re right, that was excellent!!!

Someone who dies young. Lost a friend at 52. No idea why he died because he never went to the doctors.
I could never understand what Georgette saw in Ted, but they fit. IMO the writers made a terrible pairing of the two, but I’m not really the creative type, so whaddo I know.....
(Same for Emily and Bob, lol)
Good Grief. Sorry.
Yes! I remember it! What made shows like Raymond so funny besides the great lines, was the actors who could deliver them with perfect timing, comic gestures and expressions, and the way they played off each other. That show never gets old for me, and the episodes with Amys mom and dad were some of the best.
LOL..........thanks Cowgirl. I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes. That was one of the funniest scenes of that show.

You got that right. Great casting and great acting. Even though Marie gets under my skin sometime because she’s so evil (in a nice way) it was a great show.......;)
