Forcing a smile at work linked to heavy drinking: study

Employees who work in the public eye who force themselves to smile for customers or hide feelings of annoyance may be susceptible to heavy drinking after hours, according to a new study.

Researchers at Penn State and the University of Buffalo studied the drinking habits of employees who work in the public view. Some of the jobs studied include nurses, teachers or food service employees.

The study found a link between those who fake positive emotions or suppress feelings like eye rolling with heavier drinking after their shifts ended.

Alicia Grandey, professor of psychology at Penn State, believes these type of jobs should limit the need for employees to smile for the customer, according to the study.

"Faking and suppressing emotions with customers was related to drinking beyond the stress of the job or feeling negatively," said Grandey. "It wasn't just feeling badly that makes them reach for a drink. Instead, the more they have to control negative emotions at work, the less they are able to control their alcohol intake after work."

My wife just told me she heard of a study which said exactly the opposite.

Any headline that has the words “experts say” or “study shows” should be automatically disregarded.

> this is just a dumb study and I’m not sure exactly what their objective was in doing it <

The study was done by university researchers. Those folks have to churn out “research” to keep their jobs, and to keep the grant money coming in.

So I guess late one afternoon the group leader said, “We’re almost out of time. We better come up with something. How about researching angry parakeets? Or maybe drunks who smile at work.”

Publish or perish!

I love my job.
I can’t wait to go to work each day.
I like the people I work with.
We have a lot of laughs while doing heavy technical stuff.

I have to keep a happy face and chipper attitude during the day as much as it kills me.

However, I don’t touch the alcohol. Never cared for the sauce.

They've got cause and effect reversed.

Anyone who disagrees and has a drinking problem might want to examine that :-)

Answers the question about an “honest study” doesn’t it?

“It wasn’t just feeling badly that makes them reach for a drink.”

People who say “badly” when they should say “bad” make me want to reach for a drink. What do they have — neuropathy in their fingertips?

Don’t Drink.
Don’t Smile.

Then you’ll be ok.

Back in my much younger “chemically enhanced” days I had a foreman whom his superior said about him “John has a drinking problem”.

When he heard this, John said “I don’t have a drinking problem, I have a problem getting up in the morning”.

Actually, John was a pretty heavy drinker, but I still chuckle at his response.

It’s backwards. People who have to force smiles because of where they work become heavy drinkers

“...after Trump beat the moo moo harridan.”

Aren’t you being unkind to bovines? Unlike Hillabitch they are useful to mankind, yielding milk, beef, leather, even labor; try getting the same usefulness from the Flying Buttress.

He didn’t roll his eyes but just told her there wasn’t an “easy test” - so this means he’s an alcoholic?

There was probably a lot of grinning and laughing after she left. I would have had a hard time not laughing at her right there.
