I really wanted Defiance to succeed, there were some really good elements. The SJW bludgeoning that became central to every episode probably turned a lot of viewers away.

Pretty much every one of them, with the possible exception of Dr. Who.
I have to mention “Terminator - the Sarah Connor Chronicles” which ran for two seasons on Fox in 2008-09 and was brilliantly written. I would have happily watched 10 seasons of Summer Glau running around terminating bad guys.

I thought that Enterprise was going to build up to the war with the Romulans referenced in TOS episode Balance Of Terror, and that we would get to see Lieutenant Stiless relatives who were killed in action (the character mentioned Captain Stiles, two commanders, several junior officers).

Yes, another good show that I enjoyed at the time.

I liked DS9! Of the ST:TNG universe it was by far my favorite!
I thought Enterprise started well but faded fast in its out years.

For the life of me I can't see why syfy kept the subpar Killjoys but cancelled the surprisingly decent
Dark Matter. It was the first series to even come close to being as enjoyable as Firefly yet gets the boot after 3 seasons, sigh.

Excellent show. I first saw it on PBS when I was a kid.

It seemed like
Dark Skies, the show that made everything that happened to America in the 1960s a result of war with extraterrestrials ended too soon. But what were they going to do? Just keep making everything that happened in the Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties a result of war with aliens? They probsbly couldn't sustain that.
Some "uncanny" shows aren't necessarily science fiction, but not necessarily not science fiction. Flash Forward was one of those shows. It was moderately interesting but didn't last a season. Better was Awake with the cop who woke up one day and his wife was alive and his child was dead and woke up the next day and his child was alive and his wife was dead. It was an interesting idea, but didn't last out a whole season. Both shows, I think, had a hastily thrown together last episode to resolve everything.
Alcatraz, with the long dead convicts turning up again in modern day San Francisco was another series that was interesting, but just died. Harsh Realm with the world as a virtual reality game, likewise didn't last long.

I hadn’t thought about where the series would have gone in another 2 seasons to make the ST 7 season profile; however, I like your idea.

Sounds like BBC series “ Life on Mars”.
Which I thought was interesting but after a few episodes - predictable!

That reminds me of Seven Days, where a government agent can go back in time only seven days to correct something that went wrong.
Imagine going back to September 4, 2001, to stop the terrorist attack?
On the liberal wet dream of going back to November 1, 2016, to redo the week leading up to the defeat of Hillary Clinton?

"Dead Like Me"
Even Art Bell said the second season was not up to the first season's quality mark.
He used the theme music as a bumper quite a bit for a while.
Any way, I think the creator moved on, or was pushed aside.

Ditto, on Firefly.
I’ll throw Space: 1999 in there.

It’s definitely worth checking out the 3 seasons even if some of the story arcs were left unfulfilled. It was far more interesting than The Expanse in my opinion.

DS-9 did run though the planned 7 season story arc, thus it didn’t ‘end early,’ though I would have been happy to see it continue.
Enterprise had a good 1st season, a slow 2nd and 3rd seasons and was picking up to 1st season level in the 4th and especially 5th & unfortunately final season.

After seeing so many here that I had forgotten, I realize now that they should have ended. Most were pretty bad.
