That was a show I kept wondering if I should give it my time!

So you’re recommending it. I know its SciFi satire and all that. Good as Red Dwarf?

Whatever you do, stay away for Starhyke.
We all know and love Claudia Christian,
Susan Ivanona in Babylon 5, but this cheesy,
godawful series is unwatchable.

Here’s a question for the group!

Why hasn’t the following been done as a movie, minseries or TV series?

1. The Lensmen - E.E. “Doc” Smith
2. The Foundation - Isaac Asimov
3. Anything by A. E. Van Vogt -
4. Ringworld by Larry Niven
5. More Felipe Jose Farmer
6. More Heinlein
I am sure we could add a lot of others!
Of course when is the SciFi Channel going to do SciFi again?

There was a somewhat feeble attempts of Van Vogt with 1 Riverworld made for TV movie. All the Starship Trooper (Heinlein) movies aren’t worth mentioning!

I can’t believe there is not entertainment money to be made for TV & cable in SciFi!

Loved the Foundation Trilogy as a teen, and haven’t thought of the Lensmen in years. Some of Kafka’s stuff would make great movies, but probably too weird for general audiences.

When they made Catch-22, that finished my book-to-screen wishes.

Yeah the android was written really well in Dark Matter and explored some interesting themes with her character. Loved the idea of a ‘personality chip’ that allowed the android to act completely human when warranted.

At least it remains as a weekend binge watch close alternative to Firefly even with the cliffhanger 3rd season. Glad most of the initial arcs from the first season were resolved.

Space 1999

I thought “UFO” has more potential, but the Brit execs thought they needed to have a more “Star Tek” like series. UFO had better head games and Cold War style intrigues.

I scrolled through the first fifty replies, and I was shocked!...seriously, that the one , the only, Rod Serling’s ‘59-64 “Twilight Zone”, was not named!

It had the closest connection to the classic SF short story of the post-war era, an epic period of creativity and humor. The other later series were based on SF space opera novels, a truly dreadful genre, imho.

The Starlost 1973. The series takes place on a generational space ark. Interesting concept.

I was going to say that! But I figured I'd read the whole thread just in case someone actually remembered that show. I thought it was a fascinating concept.

Great list, Reily.

I have to add Roger Zelazny’s “Chronicles of Amber” and Robert Silverberg’s “Majipoor Chronicles”. The first is already laid out chapter to episode and the second surpasses “Game of Thrones” in sheer grandiosity. Both series’ politics are just as intriguing.

UFO morphed into Space 1999. I liked the series but didn’t like the premise. To me it was a bad copy of the Jules Verne story “Off on a Comet”.

No one mentioned “The Outer Limits” either.

Which was more SciFi then “The Twilight Zone” which I loved.
I just don’t view it as necessarily SciFi.

I liked UFO better than Space 1999. The aliens were interesting. I don't recall if we ever got to see what they looked like.

They kept the true nature of the aliens a mystery..
As I remember their “alien autopsy” he wasn’t really physically an alien but a re-constructed human. (from various dissected human captives!) I remember they had a discussion as to if they aliens in some way transferred the minds to this reconstruction or it was programmed in some way.

I think one of the actually reasons they didn’t show the aliens was a lack of budget for it. It was a very low budget show

Travelers and Continuum

Travelers has 3 Seasons. Is that the end? I thought it was just Netflix waiting for another season to come out. I just started watching it and really like it. Continuum I tried, but it fell flat for me.

My vote as it applies to this thread is Altered Carbon. Not sure of there will be more of that show, but it was awesome.
