Geologists discover a new hotspot in Yellowstone supervolcano that's killing off trees in a patch of warm land the size of FOUR soccer fields
A new thermal area has popped up in Yellowstone National Park, in yet another sign of the ever-changing magma activity beneath the surface.
Satellite images have revealed an expanse of about eight acres or the equivalent of four soccer fields where the ground is warmer than its surroundings, causing the trees and vegetation in that patch to die off.
While scientists have only just confirmed its existence, the United State Geological Survey (USGS) estimates its been forming over the last 20 or so years.
Nasa believes drilling up to six miles (10km) down into the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park to pump in water at high pressure could cool it.
Despite the fact that the mission would cost $3.46 billion (£2.63 billion), Nasa considers it 'the most viable solution.'

2. Glad to know that the 8 acres is the size of 4 soccer fields.
3. Too bad NASA isn't working on it and just the mini Nasa is working on it.
4. ACTUAL glowbull warming. Caused by-----NATURE!
5. BIG BOOM thanks to Dr. Evil?!
*hot ping*
You’ve gotta fertilize the great plains every millennia or so to keep things growing.
I will hold of until I get AOC’s assessment of whats going on
Right...pump in lots'a water. Then the drill hole collapses, the water is sealed in and heated to steam, which explodes through the crust and activates the supervolcano eruption that takes out about 23 states... right...
Some humans are so arrogant.
These trees aren't the last on earth.
Idiots!!
This would be one of the only times I would be in favor of a private/public partnership.
The US government could fund the drilling of the wells.
A private investor owned electric company would build a geothermal electric generating plant to use the steam generated by the wells.
It would be a true win win endeavor.
The electric company would get the power generated by the volcanic vent and the government would be freed from the cost of building and operating the plant and of the cost of maintaining the plant and cooling water pumps (and various other things).
Dear NASA....This doesn’t need a solution. It IS a solution in itself.
The hole doesnt need to collapse. Water is H2O. What happens when hydrogen comes into contact with super hot gasses and magma?
One hell of a huge explosion. That hole will simply be an avenue for the explosion.
These people are scientists?
Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?
More..one would think these dumb asses would study some of the other incidents. like Krakatua where sea water got into that system which triggered the eruption.
I was thinking that this is a sign that global warming is going to kill us all in say... 12 years! </s>
Contributing to GoreBull warming? Whatcha gonna do about that?
I will hold of until I get AOCs assessment of whats going on
Good point. But Im also interested in Hank Johnson stepping into this discussion, though carefully of course. Dont want things tipping over.
Thanks fieldmarshaldj.

Oh, the horror of it all! The sheer horror! Those poor little trees. Trees have feeling too, dontcha know? The Occasional Kotex and the all-knowing OzoneAlGore must be immediately summoned for solutions to this horror. /S
Yup. Just leave it be. Sounds like a nice heating pad for the bison and elk to sleep on in winter.
Methinks the heat sink in the Earth’s mantle and core exceeds the cooling water reservoir capacity, possibly even that of the world’s oceans. Gravity then just keeps it coming.
Problems even if attempted, melting the pipes, water chemistry, water source for the volume of water required to transfer the heat, cooling towers and the atmospheric impacts,...no more blue sky over the area, won’t even talk about acid rain possible systems evolving.
