Volvo is very committed to the idea of ending all fatalities in cars it builds, and its even willing to watch you like a hawk and snitch on you to make that happen. Volvo announced today it will employ in-car cameras to detect when a driver is drunk or distracted, and its cars will take specific actions when such a system is detected. I suspect you can also trigger the system by just driving like a loon, but I guess well just have to see.
The system Volvo is proposing will be introduced on all next-gen, SPA2-based vehicles, referring to Volvos the second generation of the companys modular platform, the first generation of which already underpin the companys bigger cars like the S60 and XC90. The SPA2 cars will include internal cameras focused on the driver that will:
...monitor for erratic driver behavior such as a lack of steering input, closed or averted eyes, weaving across lanes and assistance systems will intervene when necessary.
The proposed interventions include audiovisual warning signals, reducing the cars speed, alerting the Volvo on Call assistance service, and finally actively taking control of the car to pull it over and park it safely as quickly as possible.
~snip~
Basically, how well will this work? Will it deliver a lot of annoying false positives if I have allergies and keep sneezing or am dancing in my seat because Radar Love came on? Will driving while being constantly watched and monitored be something I even want, just conceptually?

Do you get to shut it off when you are going to do the nasty?
This will end predictably.
Hacked footage of couples copulating in their car to be messaged to the entire student body of some high school in 10...9....8...7...
Hmmmmm ...
What’s that little two letter word I’m looking for ...
Soon #1 seller: hack to disable this “feature.”
That is why I wpuld never have a car with built in GPS or OnStar.
If it can be used for good it WILL be used for evil.
See? These silly things make me nuts. We don’t need any anti-texting laws. We just need to issue tickets.
Texting
Eating
Drinking
Smoking
Makeup
Non-hands free phone
It can all fall under “Careless Driving”. We don’t need new laws. Have a soda in your cup holder, a Big Mac on your lap and French fries on the seat next you is just as dangerous as texting. Ticket.
3M #33 tape
Perhaps parents of a teenager would like the cam... we’re watching so drive carefully.
Where is the cam? Couldn’t you just block the lens? Perhaps with dark nail polish.
Yeah...monitoring you to keep you safe. BS on them. FU Volvo
Electrical tape
There is a fix/bandaid for that:-)
"Never In A Million Years"?
Think you might be driving erratically at times if you are rushing to an emergency room?
No thanks. Our older XC90 is a tank but won’t be lookin into new.
I have never liked Volvo cars. Most of them seem to be owned by neurotic man hating feminists.
I was tboned by a Volvo station wagon I was driving a Miata. Her car was totaled. I drove mine another ten years. There were no Volvo skid marks.
Since it’s built by the Swedes, it’s probably designed to record any conversation critical of that country’s immigration policies.
