Box Office: 'Captain Marvel' Trolled The Trolls With A $455M Global Launch
Forbes ^ | 03/10/19 | Scott Mendelson

Posted on 03/11/2019 11:46:52 AM PDT by Simon Green

At this point, the notion of a new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie opening with a boffo Friday-Sunday debut is barely news anymore; it's now akin to a new Tyler Perry-as-Madea movie opening with $25 million. Still, even by Marvel's standards, Captain Marvel flew higher, further and faster than its relative competition.

The Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson/Reggie the Cat sci-fi adventure opened with $153m in North America this weekend, which is the second-biggest solo superhero non-sequel launch behind Black Panther ($202m in 2018). It's the third-biggest March opening of all time, sans inflation, behind Batman v Superman ($166m in 2016) and Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017).

It's the fourth-biggest non-sequel launch behind Beauty and the Beast, Black Panther and (if it counts as a non-sequel) The Avengers ($207 million in 2012). The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed sci-fi adventure just scored the MCU’s seventh-biggest opening behind Iron Man 3 ($174m in 2013), Captain America: Civil War ($179m in 2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191m in 2015), Black Panther ($202m in 2018), The Avengers ($207m in 2012) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258m in 2018). It earned a solid 2.55x weekend multiplier (it earned $53m in Saturday and around $42.6m on Sunday) and an A from Cinemascore.

So, no, the opening night bombardment of aggressively negative user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDB were not indicative of the general moviegoing populace. I know, I'm just as shocked—shocked—as you are. For what it's worth, this is the fifth-biggest female-led debut weekend of all time, behind only (again, sans inflation and 3-D bumps) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158 million in 2013 sans 3-D), Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220m in 2017) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248m in 2015).

Maybe, and not saying I won’t see it. But this report of a big opening is a lie.

Too many people are posting pics of absolutely EMPTY theaters where this is showing, no lines, etc.

My guess is the $ amount is entirely concocted from foreign sales using rebates and buy backs, and in America is generated through “tying clauses” that force theaters to take this if they want “Avengers.” (All, of course, illegal).

Go on Twitter. Look at the posts of a dozen theater with literally NO ONE in them. No lines. Pics of seat screens showing no seats taken.

I went to try to see Aquaman, literally the only seat you could get was in the front row-—two shows in a row.

I think these #s are phony, driven entirely by foreign sales that involve rebates from the studio.

I get what you’re saying. I suppose I should forgo hi-speed internet and access to Free Republic, since the only available source is Time-Warner. I also use Amazon, Youtube, Apple products, and other such things. Oh and I like the music of Queen, despite the singers personal inclinations.

I didn’t find the movie to be over the top SJW. Larson personally made statements that were reprehensible, but the movie didn’t reflect those statements.

The base storyline for the movie was “Yes, I fall down; but then I get up. No one else can tell me that I can’t.”

If that isn’t a conservative sentiment, then I don’t know what to tell ya.

The only conservative movie-makers I know are Sorbo and the people he works with. I’ve seen some of their flicks and liked them. Maybe if they came out with action flicks or something that isn’t as cerebral as most of their fare I would consider seeing them too.

In the meantime I read books and watch movies to provide an escape. This movie did that for me without ruining it by going over the top SJW.

In general I agree.

But that said, this really smacks of Studio tomfoolery. Many, many pics of not just “half-filled” theaters but nearly empty theaters, of seat selection screens with the whole theater empty.

I suspect Marvel has built up the #s with overseas “sales” heavily leveraged by rebates and have forced American theaters to take this title at a high price if they want “Avengers.”

And I bet those foreign dollars are rebated heavily.

What socialist media is saying this movie is SJW? The cuck author of this piece is a huge SJW. I just read her Marie Claire piece. When she talks Affirmative Action, equality and fairness it is okay? Aren’t those exactly what SJW talk about? She didn’t call out too many males. She called out white males. She didn’t just talk about more access for others. The article bragged about a percentage.

I didn’t end my MCU watching after the huge SJW MJ character, but at some point they push it too far. Every reviewer I’ve read or listened to that has had similar tastes in the past all say it sucked. This and Solo are new benchmarks for comparative taste in movies.

And some TSA agent allegedly asked for her phone number, and she tweeted about being attacked, or something. If she had been in her 80’s, they would have groped her.

Why are there so many apparently adult freepers who seem compelled to defend their preferred comic book movies and stick & ball game entertainment choices?

I tend to agree that the weekend take is inflated. We went to the movies Saturday night, butn ot for Captain “You Look Mahvelous”. Thinking back, the place wasn’t mobbed. Since the theater is all reserved seating, there’s no advantage to standing in line for an hour to get “good seats”. You can walk in 5 minutes into the previews and you know where you are sitting. Even so, the concession lines didn’t seem long either.

The most telling sight for me, though, was in parking on Saturday night. We pulled into the garage at about 7:15, and it was only half-full. With this “blockbuster” playing at 6 of 16 screens, plus a local film festival occupying 2 more and a kiddie movie or two, I would have expected to be lucky to find a spot on the roof. Nope, found parking on the bottom level of the garage, and there were others nearby. Even the pizza place across the street from the theater wasn’t that crowded. Not even a typical Saturday night there!

Just for grins and giggles, I just checked the first after 6PM showings today at the theater, including a 3D XD, a regular XD, and a regular showing. In each case, about 10% of the house was sold out. Granted, it’s a weekday, but if the fanboys and fangirls were really geeking out over this movie, I’d expect the pre-sale house to be larger than that!

No. A feminist in a predictable genderless outfit beats up a lot of guys.

Let me get thi straight...you rip on Captain Marvel, but enjoyed Aquaman?

Aquaman? The lamest superhero of all time.

Really, I've tried to watch DC movies. The only one that held my attention was Wonder Woman. DC movies are boring and brooding.

Was Captain Marvel great? No, but it was entertaining and it has left me counting down the days until Avengers Endgame.

Get ready for the next James Bond to be a black drag queen. After all there’s no differences in genders. Hollywood is dead to me and has been for years.

Actually the media is pulling this crap. They're trolling conservatives that Marvel is all woke so conservatives can piss and moan only to see the movie make mad money.

Remember when everybody thought Black Panther was this black supremacist movie and it was Galt's Gulch.

Yeah - but I like Jason Momoa who was probably the only one who could make Aquaman cool. That movie pretty much sucked too but at least had a main actor with some charisma that could carry the movie. (and also wasn’t full on SJW - just the usual “man bad - destroyed the ocean” environment propaganda... and THEIR female hero (his mom) was 10x more impressive than Captain Marvel)

Necessity is not the same thing as elective. You may have no choice but to use Time Warner, but you certainly have a choice whether or not to use Amazon. I have been refusing to buy anything through Amazon ever since I found out they hate people like me. With YouTube, you have to weigh whether the benefit of watching some videos they have is more valuable than any benefit you give them.

They have lots of videos showing people how to do things like repair roofs or fix cars, and many of these videos have saved me a great deal of trouble, and are potentially worth many hundreds of dollars to me, while giving YouTube only pennies for the benefit.

I don't like them getting anything for my views, but the advantage is still greatly mine. As for Apple, I don't own or buy any of their products. I make do with ordinary PCs and Microsoft products, which are all second hand, and therefore contribute nothing more to that company.

If that isn’t a conservative sentiment, then I don’t know what to tell ya.

It isn't about the quality of the movie. It is about putting money into the pockets of people who hate us and want us marginalized and/or destroyed.

In the meantime I read books and watch movies to provide an escape.

As do we all, but I recommend that Jews avoid purchasing "Mein Kampf" because it puts money into the pockets of people who hate them and would destroy them.

This movie did that for me without ruining it by going over the top SJW.

I have reached a point where I refuse to see any movie that portrays women as uber-super-warrior-princesses. I think promoting women as warriors is destructive to the nation, and i've seen so many examples of movies portraying women as beating up men that I am sick of it.

It is like encouraging Trans-men to think they can actually be a female. It is a sickness and we should not condone it nor help it spread.

With extremely few exceptions, women cannot fight men. It is dangerous to women to encourage them to think they can, and it is dangerous to society to spread the belief that they can.

Also, we are in a war with these people. We should endeavor to put as little money into their pocket as we can, and especially not to reward them for their promotion of ideas that are intended to be a poke in our eye.

And I said, I haven’t seen Cap. Marvel yet, and I was only commenting on foreign sales and tinkering with sales.

I plan to see Cap. Marvel. Probably will like it as I like this genre.

And I said Aquaman had its strengths and weaknesses.
