At this point, the notion of a new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie opening with a boffo Friday-Sunday debut is barely news anymore; it's now akin to a new Tyler Perry-as-Madea movie opening with $25 million. Still, even by Marvel's standards, Captain Marvel flew higher, further and faster than its relative competition.
The Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson/Reggie the Cat sci-fi adventure opened with $153m in North America this weekend, which is the second-biggest solo superhero non-sequel launch behind Black Panther ($202m in 2018). It's the third-biggest March opening of all time, sans inflation, behind Batman v Superman ($166m in 2016) and Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017).
It's the fourth-biggest non-sequel launch behind Beauty and the Beast, Black Panther and (if it counts as a non-sequel) The Avengers ($207 million in 2012). The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed sci-fi adventure just scored the MCUs seventh-biggest opening behind Iron Man 3 ($174m in 2013), Captain America: Civil War ($179m in 2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191m in 2015), Black Panther ($202m in 2018), The Avengers ($207m in 2012) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258m in 2018). It earned a solid 2.55x weekend multiplier (it earned $53m in Saturday and around $42.6m on Sunday) and an A from Cinemascore.
So, no, the opening night bombardment of aggressively negative user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDB were not indicative of the general moviegoing populace. I know, I'm just as shockedshockedas you are. For what it's worth, this is the fifth-biggest female-led debut weekend of all time, behind only (again, sans inflation and 3-D bumps) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158 million in 2013 sans 3-D), Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220m in 2017) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248m in 2015).

Oh yeah - shes Superman without any weaknesses except her own self-doubt caused by the white male patriarchy that she has to overcome.
Jeeez. I read the headline and thought this was the hugest launch ever. Then, you get into the article to find that it did well but wasnt the greatest. It is the best opening for a solo super hero movie featuring someone wearing tights while glowing and drinking water in onat least one scene where music is playing in the background.
I suppose I would go see the movie if it wasnt corrupted by its lead actress into such an in your face experience. No thanks. Ill stick to being suckered into going to the next Star Wars Episode IX men bad, women great where we can continue to learn how men screwed up that galaxy far far away.
I had a student (female) who went to see the film over the weekend. She is a big Marvel fan. She said the film sucked.
Seems pretty obvious...
There is NO such thing a bad publicity. The star’s daffy yapping simply pumped the press, the bloggers, the supposed trolls into overdrive. It may have garnered some additional support from left leaning moviegoers, but in reality...
The star of the flick and the flick itself have been living, rent free, in the minds of fans, haters, otaku, and the aforementioned press.
Seems we all know someone else that has used that kind of derangement to stay on top of the public consciousness.

So you accuse FR members for being haters for refusing to support Hollywood?
There is an interesting mash-up on YouTube of Gal Gadot speaking about Wonder Woman and Brie Larsen speaking about Captain Marvel.
Gal Gadot was clearly thrilled to make a movie about values featuring a strong woman character. She was pretty pumped to be a good example for people.
Brie Larson came across as a bitter woman who didn't like white dudes. This mostly came across when she kept saying "I'm not saying I hate white dudes".
I remember in the months before Titanic came out, I heard a bunch of reports how they feared it would tank and not recover the money they spent on it.
“The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed sci-fi adventure just scored the MCUs seventh-biggest opening behind Iron Man 3 ($174m in 2013), Captain America: Civil War ($179m in 2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191m in 2015), Black Panther ($202m in 2018), The Avengers ($207m in 2012) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258m in 2018).”
In other words, its opening weekend was actually in the range of the oddball entries like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, rather than the flagship films from the studio. That’s a pretty big loss for Marvel when they were clearly trying to make her into a central character to replace the likes of Thor, Captain America, or the Hulk in the next set of films.
I hate to tell you, but the Skrulls are the villians of the Marvel Universe. They invade and infiltrate many cultures.....I do not blame the Kree for wanting to build walls to keep them out.
I think you missed the real message.
They’ll be along...a sodomite character is next.
I hate to tell you but you obviously havent seen the movie then.
“too many freepers are turning into haters without actually giving a movie a chance.”
I’m glad you enjoyed the film, and I bet it was very good indeed. But I refuse to hand any of my hard earned money to people who figuratively spit on me, every chance they get (i.e. Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson)
No, I did not see it. I admit that.
I know that it beat Wonder Woman, which was not SJW. So, I trust the audience (market) over your opinion.
Americans can spend $455 million to go to the movies but can’t pay their own medical bills. Weird.
Slam dunk! Needed to be said. Eloquent, too.
She’s hardcore SJW. I judge her for her actions and who she associates with, not what the media portrays her to be. You should try doing the same.
Best - Captain America: Civil War
Worst - Iron Man 3
But the absolute non-MCU Marvel movie was the Fantastic Four reboot. Awful story, awful cast.
Freeper response has become very predictable in the 15 years Ive been here.
I dont know anyone who is watching this garbage anymore.
Too much PC crap .
Yes, the same way the media judges Trump for his actions and who he associates with.
Enjoy your socialist future!
