At this point, the notion of a new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie opening with a boffo Friday-Sunday debut is barely news anymore; it's now akin to a new Tyler Perry-as-Madea movie opening with $25 million. Still, even by Marvel's standards, Captain Marvel flew higher, further and faster than its relative competition.
The Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson/Reggie the Cat sci-fi adventure opened with $153m in North America this weekend, which is the second-biggest solo superhero non-sequel launch behind Black Panther ($202m in 2018). It's the third-biggest March opening of all time, sans inflation, behind Batman v Superman ($166m in 2016) and Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017).
It's the fourth-biggest non-sequel launch behind Beauty and the Beast, Black Panther and (if it counts as a non-sequel) The Avengers ($207 million in 2012). The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed sci-fi adventure just scored the MCUs seventh-biggest opening behind Iron Man 3 ($174m in 2013), Captain America: Civil War ($179m in 2016), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191m in 2015), Black Panther ($202m in 2018), The Avengers ($207m in 2012) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258m in 2018). It earned a solid 2.55x weekend multiplier (it earned $53m in Saturday and around $42.6m on Sunday) and an A from Cinemascore.
So, no, the opening night bombardment of aggressively negative user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDB were not indicative of the general moviegoing populace. I know, I'm just as shockedshockedas you are. For what it's worth, this is the fifth-biggest female-led debut weekend of all time, behind only (again, sans inflation and 3-D bumps) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158 million in 2013 sans 3-D), Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220m in 2017) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248m in 2015).

went to see this film sunday, was pleasantly surprised how good it was.too many freepers are turning into haters without actually giving a movie a chance.
I wonder how many of these tickets were bought by the studio and then given away for free?
The issue is not with the quality of the film but of the liberal filth being spewed by its lead actress.
What have you seen that would lead you to such speculation?
One isn’t obligated to give it a chance. I just won’t support this way of promotion by going angry feminist. If I’m the only one then I’m the only one. I find it quite foolish for people such as yourself to complain about the culture and then support the very thing that is sponsoring the destruction of the culture. This is not me saying never go to a Hollywood movie but the nonsense that I’ve heard spewed from the star regarding this movie isn’t something I think should be rewarded.
Leading actress is an SJW that can’t understand normal thinking.
It had a $152 mil production budget. Didn’t make that back til Sunday.
We’ll see if it’s got legs...
Lead actress is an SJW that can’t understand normal thinking.
It wouldn’t be the first time box office numbers have been finagled.
Saw it yesterday. It was an ok film. Not the best, Capt. America First Avenger for me, of the Marvel fair and not the worst, 2nd Iron Man for me.
The story did seem formulaic and didn’t really have a lot of real drama built into the script. The constant flashbacks seemed more interruptive than helpful. I know what they were trying to say and lead up to at the climax, but Larson just didn’t deliver it with the passion it needed.
Jackson and the cat made the movie. Larson’s acting was robotic at best and didn’t seem to have any real passion.
Overall it was a decent setup for the May Avengers release and gives the fans something to chew on until then. I would have put it out in Dec to space it between Infinity War and End Game better instead of putting it where they did, but they probably didn’t have it ready.
If you actually read what Brie Larson said instead of a summary, you would know it was not so much SJW as just being proud of being a female lead in a superhero movie.
This is not Star Wars. The SJW nonsense was not injected here.
Rotten Tomoatoes and the other social media sites do not speak for the public who want to see the next addition to the Marvel Universe...especially after Avengers: Infinity War.
Marvel has not given into the SJW crowd. Captain America is fiercely individualistic and made 2 movies against big government. Avengers: Infinity War was about radical environmentalists who think the universe is overpopulated. Black Panther was about racists who become the haters.
I am sorry, but I think Marvel had done a great job so far and has been true to the premise of the comics....which were all about ordinary people with everyday problems who have gifts and need to rise to the occasion.
Saw it. It sucked.
The fx are decent and the story follows a decent pace - but drags horribly in the third act.
Bries acting is wooden and stiff and they seem to have to get around that by having all the other characters talk about how funny and lively she is. Then she makes a sardonic remark that just falls dead.
Shes also a worse Mary Sue character than Rey from Star Wars.
But the worst part is that Furys character is retconned from bad MF to goof ball beta and the entire plot ends up being a recovery of the original tesseract from the first Captain America - that thing gets around.
Personally I think Disney knew they had a dud on their hands and false flagged the review bombing to drum up support for this bomb.
My understanding on the Tessaract is that Stark picked it up at the end of Cap 1st Avenger and the alien was working at his lab and got hold of it. From there it went to Shield, which then loaned it to the guy in the Thor movie.
I definitely see your points and the “Men in Black” comment is on point.
I basically saw it as a lead in to the next avengers and the hero movies have been my daughter/father thing for years so I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity.
Looking forward to May with Endgame and Shazam both coming out.
About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male, Larson told Marie Claire interviewer Keah Brown
She appears to have an issue with white male reporters and sought to change that. Instead of being concerned about the quality of press coverage, she was more concerned about the spectral makeup of her entourage.
First, what Brie Larson said is not what is summarized by the media.....just as what Trump says is not what is summarized by the media.
So, try to open your mind and actually see what she said in its entirety.....it was not SJW stuff. The SJW stuff was created by a media that summarized it for you.
Do not swallow whatever the socialist media ejaculates. Think for yourself.
You do it for Trump...do it for everyone.
any moose slime superheroes in it?
This entire movie was SJW nonsense - complete with Anti-Trump dogma where they accused the Kree of trying to build walls to keep out the immigrant Skrulls.
All the men were villains or made to look like goof balls (Fury) and all the women were super heroic and noble - including the token assassin who was better than all her male teammates.
Does a hot chick in a slinky outfit beat up a lot of guys..?
