World's Smallest Baby Who Weighed 1/2 Pound Goes Home After 5 Months in Hospital

The world’s tiniest baby is finally back home following five months at a Tokyo hospital after he was born weighing just half of a pound.

The baby boy, whose name has not been made public, went home on Feb. 20, much to the delight of his parents who feared for the baby’s life, according to Reuters. He was delivered last August via C-section and weighed 268 grams (9.45 oz) after he failed to gain weight in the womb. He went home from the hospital weighing 7 lbs.

“I am grateful that he has grown this big because, honestly, I wasn’t sure he could survive,” the boy’s mother told Reuters.

The baby was born at 24 weeks gestation at Tokyo’s Keio University Hospital and could fit in the palm of a person’s hands, CNN reported. Dr. Takeshi Arimitsu, who treated the baby, told CNN that the baby needed a ventilator and an umbilical catheter for infusion therapy when he was born.

Arimitsu notes that premature births aren’t that common in Japan, adding that the rate of infants’ low birthweight “is almost 10 percent in Japan.”

Before the baby born in Tokyo, the record for the world’s smallest baby went to a baby boy born in 2009 in Germany at just over 9 ounces, according to the University of Iowa’s Tiniest Babies registry.

The news comes just weeks after a pair of micro-preemie twin girls were born at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, according to the Associated Press.

We are waiting for our Niece & Nephew-in-law to bring their preemie home. He was born in November at only 1.5 pounds. Had to get bigger, then had surgery on his intestines (common in preemies) and when he hits 5 pounds or so he can come home! He's off all support of any kind. He's a little tiger!

But, you know, he's just a glob of cells, so why all the fuss? ;)

My Aunt died recently at the age of 98.

She was slightly premature and weighed only 2 1/2 pounds at birth, in November in Eastern, rural Montana.

He folks kept her in the oven for several months until she got up to weight.

Lasted 98 years...

Meanwhile, 10,000 other babies are terminated.

What a happy ending for baby and parents-if a liberal woman had been told her baby was having a hard time, she’d have had it terminated immediately, by whatever means caused her the least discomfort, and just gone on with her life...

My grandmother died at 97 in her sleep-she just stopped-she was healthy and active to the end-she drank alcohol and smoked, but never ate processed food, lived in a city or was ever overweight at all. She was born on a ranch in remote West Texas-closest place was Odessa-she was supposedly about 7 weeks premature, born in mid January. Her parents owned a feed-and-ranch store, so she was weighed on the scale used there and weighed less then 3 lbs. Her parents and the midwife wrapped her in blankets and put her cradle by the woodstove that heated the kitchen/living area-her 9 older siblings helped out by keeping the fire going, changing diapers and bringing her to mom to nurse every few hours, keeping her warm like that until she got lively and started to gain weight.

She had 15 kids-one died in his teen years-did ranch work and ran that store until she died-she was one tough woman and made sure all of us who lived on the ranch were brought up tough, too...

“Glad you cleared that up...”

She was too small to close the door and eat...<;-)

Her father lived to about 99 (I can’t remember exactly though I did go to his funeral).

He was married to my Aunt’s mother for more than 35 years before she died (the wife). He remarried and was married to the next wife for more than 40 years.

Far too many folks never make it to 35 years of marriage, let alone twice!

Wow, your family is awesome.
I have an aunt who is 98, never married, & has remained pure. She had a younger suitor (late 70s) a few years ago, when she was already 90s. He proposed but died shortly after! We teased her a bit— the poor guy got too excited!
She has attended & taught Sunday school at the same church for over 70 years (since it was first built) and until last year she drove herself there. Now she rides with a younger friend who’s 89.
They sure dont make ‘em like that anymore!
