Dollar Tree announced early Wednesday morning during its fourth-quarter earnings results that it will be closing as many as 390 of its Family Dollar stores in 2019 and remodeling 200 locations to become Dollar Tree stores. This follows on from 85 store closings at the chain during the fourth quarter of 2018. It has been three years since Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar, and analysts say that so far, it's been a disappointing run. The discount chain, which has more than 8,000 stores in the United States, has pulled down its parent company's earnings over the past few years. In its most recent results, same-store sales at Dollar Tree only were up 3.2%. Family Dollar saw a more modest increase of 1.4%. Family Dollar "remains the weaker part of the business," Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients in November. He continued: "From our data, a high proportion of Family Dollar's shopper base goes there out of necessity rather than because they particularly want to. There is nothing wrong with this position, but it does mean that as financial conditions improve, or people feel they can afford something better, they are more likely to migrate away." Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar in 2015, after undergoing a bidding war with Dollar General, its main US rival. Dollar Tree and Dollar General are almost neck-and-neck in terms of store count and annual sales.

I took pictures of one of them to send to Corp. but some one must have beaten me two it as a couple days later they actually ran a vacuum on the floor after MONTHS. They even pick up the quarter sized cockroach that greeted you at the door (inside the building)
True.
Just a few months ago read an article about the explosion of these stores everywhere. Just stands to reason some will fold.
You really can find some very useful items in these stores.
“Here the Family Dollars are mostly in bad neighborhoods and are considered ghetto ATMs. Robbed regularly of money and merchandise.”
Sadly, the crooks are smart, and know that these stores have a lot of cash money customers.
Order of favor:
Dollar General
Dollar Tree
Family Dollar
Dollar General is far ahead in the pack. They have more name brand items at lower prices.
Family Dollar is a bit overpriced for everything. It is more like shopping at a 7-11.
Dollar General is a good store, sort of positioning itself halfway between Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.
In our fair city, both Family Dollar Stores are in a Hub Zone, a Federal preferential real estate zone that are based on identity politics, mostly black neighborhoods. The Family Dollar Stores are there because the grocery store chains will not go anywhere need these places.
The last one opened here told the city they wanted a site on a busy street with lots of low-income people nearby.
“99c Only” is the best dollar store in “FR Country”...Dollar General not so much. For groceries “Grocery Warehouse” is decent...just watch the exp. dates.
Ah, it’s not like the workers are getting murdered.
In this good economy, it might be the push they need to move on to bigger and better :)
Always hard at first, but sometimes great things come from what seems bad.
Reading glasses, sunglasses, batteries, and greeting cards are great money-savers from the dollar stores. I would never get anything claiming to be edible there, though.
what do they think they are pharmacies? Walgreens & Rite Aid have often been close to each other ( in parts of NJ at least)
I like Dollar Tree. Everything is still a dollar. When I get the sh*ts I can run over to the local store, pick up some anti-diarrheal capsules, get checked out, and get back home before you can say ....
Sure beats Wally World where you have to fight the heathens for a handicapped parking space, endure a search through the section of the store where the capsules used to be, go to the new location and if you are lucky find they are still in stock, then wait endlessly in line for the one or two checkers on duty to take your cash and wish you a happy day.(Yeh, right)
When you are a my age (75) and not a participant of the cashless society, the automated checkouts are a waste of time. I can’t see the readouts (nearly blind), can’t follow the directions (easily confused), can’t hear clearly, etc. BUT, once I got to the point of getting through the automated routine only to find the dumb machine did not take cash and make change. So back to the long line at the regular checkout with my cash in hand.
BTW I noticed a couple of other customers (?) bystanders with chains, tattoos, and assorted body piercings who evidently thought it was funny to watch the old 20th century guy fighting progress. A few years ago, I would have kicked their a$$e$. OTOH, Wally World still has MENs rooms (for plan B). But that is another story....
Bottom Line: If you want to getter her done - Go to the Dollar Tree.
Yeah, but they are often too close together.
I shop there for greeting cards, 2 for $1. otherwise I see them as China import stores - huge majority of the items are made in china it seems.
“BTW, you’re not saving money at these stores A package of garbage bags is $1, but you only get about 7-10 bags. I can go to Woodman’s and get 40 thirty-gallon bags for $2.50. “
indeed. and i found that most of the knockoff cleaning products with labels that sort of look like the real thing are little more than colored water ...
The 40-count is $7.99.
Here in Alabama, there is a Dollar General in every wide spot in the road town. They are really convenient when the nearest big box store is 20-30 minutes away. Even the one near my house is often preferable to driving to Wally World or Winn Dixie, which are less that ten minutes away, but on a heavily traveled highway.
Yup.
Dollar Tree still has reading glasses (that I use) for one dollar while everywhere else they're six dollars or more.

[But, if you need to pick up some things quickly, Dollar Tree is more like a convenience store - with better prices than other convenience stores (at least around here).]
