Dollar Tree announced early Wednesday morning during its fourth-quarter earnings results that it will be closing as many as 390 of its Family Dollar stores in 2019 and remodeling 200 locations to become Dollar Tree stores. This follows on from 85 store closings at the chain during the fourth quarter of 2018. It has been three years since Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar, and analysts say that so far, it's been a disappointing run. The discount chain, which has more than 8,000 stores in the United States, has pulled down its parent company's earnings over the past few years. In its most recent results, same-store sales at Dollar Tree only were up 3.2%. Family Dollar saw a more modest increase of 1.4%. Family Dollar "remains the weaker part of the business," Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients in November. He continued: "From our data, a high proportion of Family Dollar's shopper base goes there out of necessity rather than because they particularly want to. There is nothing wrong with this position, but it does mean that as financial conditions improve, or people feel they can afford something better, they are more likely to migrate away." Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar in 2015, after undergoing a bidding war with Dollar General, its main US rival. Dollar Tree and Dollar General are almost neck-and-neck in terms of store count and annual sales.

These are good stores, particularly Dollar Tree.
They sell this special brand of BBQ chips for a buck in a big size and not even the 99 cents store sells in L.A. Damn..
BTW, you're not saving money at these stores A package of garbage bags is $1, but you only get about 7-10 bags. I can go to Woodman's and get 40 thirty-gallon bags for $2.50.
No surprise. Too many stores, too close together and in locations with little money.
True - you can save more $$$ doing your homework and shopping around.
But, if you need to pick up some things quickly, Dollar Tree is more like a convenience store - with better prices than other convenience stores (at least around here).
I tend to agree.
The market will sort it out.
Dollar Tree to me is far superior to Family Dollar, which isnt even a dollar store.
Yep, you have to be smart shopper, even in the these Dollar stores. If you count the drive and time to a bigger town with WalMart you may still come out ahead at the Dollars.
“These are good stores, particularly Dollar Tree.”
I LOVE Dollar Tree, I just don’t tell anyone.
When Obozo was pResident these stores did well because nobody had money. Now that the economy is roaring people can spend their money in higher priced stores.
Pawn shops also did well during Obozo’s 8 years. Go figure.
I used to go by Dollar Tree regularly as I could buy cheap gifts for my Grandchildren for almost nothing. For instance a cap gun which shot these single caps which were around 10 times louder than the ones I used to play with.
Every now and then I would find a real deal. Once they had pretty nice scientific calculators for a dollar. Right alongside the nice maybe 50 function ones were extremely basic ones for the same price.
I haven’t been in one in a few years tho.
I laugh, folks in Culleoka Tx by pass their Family Dollar will drive 5 mi to Princeton Tx to shop at their Family Dollar.
Its ritzy and **** in Princeton.
These are probably the 390 stores with the largest numbers of armed robberies in recent years.
I know that sounds illogical.
I hope our family dollar is going to convert to a Dollar Tree, rather than close completely.
I love me a dollar tree. Everything is a buck, or less. The Dollar Store not so much.
I'm not going to spend $1 ($1.06 actually) for 7 trash bags that will break in half when I can a whole roll of 40 for just $2.50.
Besides these stores are packed with Somalis and other refugees
Here the Family Dollars are mostly in bad neighborhoods and are considered ghetto ATMs. Robbed regularly of money and merchandise.
