WASHINGTON Anti-vaccination activists, some with their (presumably unvaccinated) children, packed the Dirksen Senate Office Building Tuesday morning for a hearing that they hoped would vindicate, or at least recognize as legitimate, their fear that protecting their families from measles runs the risk of something worse, including autism and other disorders.
As the doors closed on the room where the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions was meeting, a woman could be heard pleading to be allowed in to give her side of what has become a heated, and potentially dangerous, controversy.
That hope would be quickly dashed. The committees chairman, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., recalled the polio epidemic of his youth, before the invention of a vaccine for the disease, which can cause permanent paralysis and respiratory failure. I had classmates who lived in iron lungs, he said. Vaccines save lives.
The hearing comes at a time when mistrust of vaccines has been inflamed by suspicion of government and of science and has spread virally, you could say by social media. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 11 states are currently experiencing measles outbreaks. Measles was declared eradicated in the United States in 2000, but herd immunity a communitys collective resistance to disease has been eroding as parents have opted out of vaccinating their children.
The anti-vaccination movement has succeeded in literally bringing back plagues of the past, lamented one witness, John G. Boyle of the Immune Deficiency Foundation.

I think the reason the flu shots aren’t mandatory outside the medical industry and the military is that the flu mutates so rapidly that there is no single vaccination that provides long lasting immunity.
Every year it’s a new best guess at what strains are most likely concoction.
If they ever develop a vaccine that does provide lifetime immunity (or at least long term) in a single dose or series of doses, it will probably end up on the required list within 5 years of introduction.
Regardless of your views on vaccines, can someone point out where in the US Constitution, the federal government has an enumerated power to force vaccines on the citizenry?
It’s not the Federal government that is forcing it on anyone. It’s the states and the habit predates the Federal government.
FYI, General George Washington required mandatory smallpox vaccination of his soldiers.
Smallpox?
The vaccine killed more than smallpox did. That’s a failure in my books.
According to WHO, they have higher reported vaccination rates than the US. Unfortunately, still according to WHO, they also have a much lower confidence in the veracity of the reported rates than they do in the US.
The short answer is corruption. They take money for vaccination programs, pocket it and lie like hell.
A separate article noted that mandatory vaccination differs from compulsory vaccination. With mandatory vaccination, people might have to pay a fine (like Henning Jacobson) or they might be prohibited from attending school (like Rosalyn Zucht) or from working in a particular hospital or business. With compulsory vaccination, on the other hand, people are vaccinated against their will or children are vaccinated against their parents will.
The article noted a recent example of compulsory vaccination occurred in Philadelphia, where parents withholding vaccines on religious grounds (which state law permitted) were taken to court. The ACLU refused to defend the parents (surprise) and the kids were immunized on "public health" concerns.
It seems it's only a matter of time before someone uses this flimsy thinking to force gun confiscation as a public health matter.
Some teenager overruled his mom yesterday.
Society needs to quarantine these weaker vax folks into medical wards.
And us NeverVax people are stronger than you weak vax folks,
AND YOU KNOW IT! You fear it.
But you really fear your vulnerability and weakness.
Strong NeverVaxers do laugh at you weakened folks. Fo% the rest of your life, you are WEAKENED.
NeverVax people unite! You are biologically stronger.
Ridicule Pro Vaxers for their willful drug dependency,
and their willful weakness. Do not enable them. Be tough on them, they need it. That is real love, be tough on vaxers.
Vax companies have legal immunity from prosecution.
A Vax executive could shoot your kid down in the street, and judges must look away.
Statistic promoters lie.
There is no enumerated power to force people to go to school, to ensure food safety and to quaranteen sick people to name a few.
Hey you want to home school and keep you and yours away from all other people have at it. But in this case your personal ignorance puts others at risk.
I got my immunity the old fashion way, only vaccine I had was smallpox. Every Flu shot has been 2 weeks of being SICK. After the Bird Flu I said NO MORE. Then again I don’t trust doctors or their meds. I’ve paid a horrible price for those FDA Approved Drugs. A Ruined spine, Osteoporosis, and a Ruined Gastro tract from Osteoarthritis drugs.
DPT shots made my boys go through a month of dragging the leg they had it in. Dr. finally ordered a DT shot for them. Gardasil is the ABSOLUTE WORSE of all the vaccines. ASK India who banned it about the Poor Dead Girls thanks to Bill Gates Eugenics project.
What is this new 6 in 1 shot going to do. I’m not an anti vaxer just want some Immunity built up before you start jabbing the JUNK into my kids. How about developing a Rast or scratch allergy tests to see if it’s safe?
US is the only country to force 36 vaccines, starting with that Hep shot the day your baby is born, you have to be having risky sex or using dirty needles for that.
Using the same legal logic that everyone should be forced against their will to put vaccines in their body for the good of society, what’s to stop them from helping themselves to your organs for the same reasons?
A rather tortured example of logic.
Anyway you don’t have enough organs to supply everyone.
Let’s ask this question, - A dozen people enter the country with disease X, they are told they are to be quarantined. They refuse! Should we let them go?
If we quarantine them we are interfering with their freedom to come and go as they please. However if they exercise that right they take away rights from a larger group - the rest of the population who like to keep a high probability of remaining healthy!
Maybe we force them to wear biological containment suits!
They don’t want to do it again interferes with their rights.
Or we roll the dice let them do what they want and put everyone at more certain risk or roll the dice quarantine/vaccinate and put a few at less certain much less almost a theoretical risk? (Vaccination can be thought of as a type of containment suit only its inside of you, you are not inside of it! But this way everyone wears one! Containment suits are a risk they can be punctured!)
There is always going to be a cost! Its never zero! It sucks if you or a loved one has to put the cost. Reality is reality there’s always a cost!
