Bare-faced and clad in jeans, clutching a rather uncertain-looking black toddler on her hip, Stacey Dooley stands beaming in the dust of a parched African landscape. At first glance you could mistake it for a gap year snapshot, destined to be pinned up somewhere in a student bedroom. Dooley is, of course, one of the breakout stars of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, and the picture was taken in Uganda, where she is making a film for the upcoming Comic Relief...(snip)
Which is perhaps why the Labour MP David Lammy touched such a nerve when he responded to the image by tweeting that “the world doesn’t need any more white saviours”, or western do-gooders flying in, believing they are solving the developing world’s problems while blissfully ignorant of the colonial baggage they carry...(snip)

Their only source of water was a rill a long distance away.
Every day individuals would trek to the rill to scoop up dirty water.
No one thought to build a sled to carry water for everyone.
No one thought to DIG A DEEP HOLE so the water would collect in the hole and they could get clean water.
No one thought to re-channel the water.
No one thought to move closer to the water source or MOVE OUT OF THE DESERT!.
You can't help people who won't or can't help themselves.

IIRC the Aborigines of Australia lived there in isolation for 50,000 years and are among the most primitive cultures on Earth. It is not a given that certain groups will advance beyond the stone age.

Sure! Good point. Isolation does breed apathy and sloth IMHO.
And as I was thinking about it more this morning, maybe it’s the women in the tribe that cracked that whip on the men to move the technology up?
Get me that water, we need food and more of it, I’m cold, I’m too hot, why did you only bring this much firewood when you know we needed more etc...
