U.S. Army equipment experts plan to test lighter-weight, individual body armor plates by this summer, according to a recently released Defense Department test and evaluation report.
The Army's multi-component Soldier Protection System body armor features hard-armor plates designed to stop rifle rounds. Theyre known as the Vital Torso Protection component of the system.

I also like what I read about the JLTV.
Its always a struggle to lighten the load of a soldier. However once you save weight in one spot, its a temptation to add another piece of gear. That said, lighter plates are a step in the right direction.
I always wondered how Eastwood managed to cut out that hunk of armor plating that could withstand Winchester bullets.
And even if the plate stops the bullet from penetrating, there's the blunt force trauma under the point(s) of impact, and high velocity bullet fragments coming off the plate parallel to the surface - either one of those can potentially kill you...
