When most people scope out a new gym, they tend to focus on the quality of the equipment, range of class offerings, and amenities in the locker room. Alison Feller, however, wants to know about the bathrooms. I go to Orangetheory because they have three, she says.
Feller has Crohns disease, so knowing that there are plenty of restrooms nearby is pretty important. During a flare, patients often have frequent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and fever. Pain, fatigue, and weight loss are common, too, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Mayo Clinic.
Although every patient is different, Feller, who was diagnosed at age 7, finds that living with the inflammatory bowel disease means dealing with extremes. I either feel amazing or Im flaring and feeling horrible, she says. Theres really no middle ground. Equally frustrating? When shes having a flare, she never knows when it will end. Ive had flares that lasted two weeks and flares that lasted two years.
When Fellers in the midst of a flare, mornings are especially rough. Shes often stuck sitting on the toilet or really close by for fear that she wont make it back there in time. Few things in life are more discouraging, disheartening, and embarrassing than having a toddler-style accident in my own apartment, steps from my own toilet, she writes on her blog. I am 33 years old, and sometimes I poop my pants. It is my least favorite thing about myself.
Feller says that the messy accidentscoupled with the physical discomfort and unpredictable nature of her conditionoften get her down, and have caused her to struggle with bouts of depression on and off throughout her life.

Good post. Much sympathy. I never had C. or IBS but when I was racing bikes we used to regularly “go” in the saddle. People who were never athletes (or soldiers) cannot understand.
Man her sex life must require a tolerant partner
And then some
Or pilots/astronauts, but they wear stuff for that.
First of all running is stupid
mountain biking is the way to go
Second Crohns disease and all their entire summers orders are completely curable using various remedies the main and best one is cleansing
Do you rise and shine cleanse is very good and even just your basic super cleanse pills are also excellent you just take them for a few weeks at a time it will completely clean your intestines of all the nasty plaque that forms and causes all diseases
you dont really have to do anything else- just take cascara sagrada. Triphala etc
Its stunning and amazing how incredible cleansing is using these divine given herbs !
Snake oil. I know Crohns. Many people and diagnosis of it are so far off that these “cures” are at best - very misleading.
Stuff like this post sorta piss me off. Keep posting, sure but this is crap.
I have two friends who are/were mountain bikers who had serious biking accidents with broken bones and head injuries.
One of them was gnawing on a chicken leg when I went to visit him in the hospital. He was a vegetarian. LOL He still doesn't believe me when I tell him about it.
Humira apparently works also. However, that is an immunosuppressant of sorts, it seems.
I’ve had to slow down to a walk at times on long runs because my pooping impulse would get stimulated. Fortunately, I’ve never had to drop one in my shorts or go behind a bush.
As for that dude in the picture in #6: THAT’s determination (unless that’s from a slapstick movie). Hope there were showers at the finish line.
As someone who struggles with Crihns, you dont know what the Fuk youre talking about. You are either in remission or youre not.
A marathoner I knew said he once saw a world champion female marathoner pull her shorts sideways, squat in the gutter and get right back to running, when she was stricken with diarrhea during a race.
Maybe it’s not uncommon when you’re pushing the body to the limits like that - lactic acid and prostaglandins and who knows what building up in the system.
Inspiring indeed! My wife works for the Crohns and Colitis foundation, and they do amazing work and raise tremendous amounts of awareness and research funds through the Team Challenge race events.
Certainly running isn’t for everyone, but it is for a great many!
Instead of tearing down the article, the diseases or the activity or running, we should laud people’s efforts to stay fit and help the those with these diseases and be as supportive as we can.
CCF also runs nationwide summer camps for kids who suffer from Crohns and IBD. Amazing kids who get the chance to realize they are not alone in their misery, and that they have a supportive network of caring people. Not easy to zip-line, swim and horseback ride with a colostomy bag.
They get to attend these camps because doctors and nurses and nutritionists and volunteer adults with Crohns or IBD, (or not), all volunteer their time to make the camps possible.
I offer my sincere appreciation to everyone involved.
[[Stuff like this post sorta piss me off.]]
Exactly, Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself- herbs are not going to fix that- strong medicines can barely fix it for most people- herbal remedies do nothing but prey on the gullible and desperately sick who are so desperate they will try anything- to waste their hard earned money on- diet fads do nothing except perhaps help a LITTLE by eliminating possible food triggers such as spices which can flare crohn’s
peopel who THINK they were ‘cured’ by diet or herbal remedies were either close to natural remission anyways, or had very mild cases that, like mentioned above, were being triggered by things like spices which can aggravate the mild stages-
This is called ‘anecdotal evidences’ where people claim they are cured “
Because they tried... fill in the blank... and they got better”- Heck- they tried so many tights during their desperate search for answers, there is no way to tell what, if anything, actually helped them- perhaps just excersizing and eating a little healthier helped them in their mild stages, or they went into remission naturally, and now think their diet was the ‘cure’
Those who prey on the sick and desperate by promising cures that have NEVER been CLINICALLY tested are despicable people-

That’s awesome- bowel problems are terribly taxing on folks, especially because they get very little nutrition when they are sick because what they eat goes through them so quickly- they miss out on lots of nutrients- and their growth is stunted, and they become outcasts in society really- “The sick kid” - it’s cool that they have a camp like this for these kids- helps give them a boost in morale I’m sure- a much needed boost-
“Crohns disease and all their entire summers orders are completely curable using various remedies the main and best one is cleansing.”
I accept. My response is that a family member with Chron’s disease matches the article: flares for two weeks and flares for two years. Ten bathroom breaks a day. Constant messes. Fatigue. Not fun.
Everyone has a secret weapon. Resveratrol is a miracle. Other potential miracles: Asacol, cleansings, St. John’s Wort herb, Remicade, etc. Just cut down on Prednisone which is addicting.
Marathons with Chron’s? That is suspicious, since fatigue and dizziness is a big symptom.
