I never leave my stink bugs outside in cold weather. It’s cruel....................
i read contrary views on this- some articles snow and cold kills ticks, some say lack of snow and cold helps ticks- they claim ticks burrow into leaf litter to survive the winters- hopefully the cold is killing them off because they are creeping far more north than before
Lots of insects use this go inside strategy.
House flies have zero tolerance for cold. A small number hide out in barns, sheds and houses where the temperature is just above freezing or warmer. The eggs, pupa and adults that are outside ALL die. When spring comes, the survivors come out, and start new batches of flies. You don’t see many flies in the spring, but they are everywhere by summer.
Stink bugs use the same strategy.
GMTA!.....................
I heard that stink bugs have taken over Capital Hill.
Many years ago we had a problem with those gypsy moths here in S.E. Michigan.......
Then again a number of years ago it was the emerald ash borer that destroyed all the Ash trees here too. That was a sight to behold.
Snow does have an insulation value, but in our case, we have had lots of snow, but the snow hasn’t lingered. Lots of very cold days with plenty of wind and no blanket of snow.
Can We add 95% of All the politicians to the list ???
Our Cane Corso Italian Mastiff absolutely LOVES to eat the damned things. She found a pile (like a double handful) in between two pillows on the Patio furniture and just stood there crunching away.
I asked Her if She wanted any salt, chocolate sauce or anything else, She just kept on eating them till they were gone.
Any that make it in the house get chased down and eaten.
don’t forget the chiggers!
Around here, Northern Virginia, the birds had been leaving them alone but one day, a huge flock of grackles landed on the deck and feasted on thousands of the bugs. Cleaned them out.
Stink bug term does not include politicians?
Stink bugs are even worse. We will see them crawling around inside the numerical dials of gas pumps here in SW PA. Flies don’t even try to get in those spots.
I’ve seen very few stink bugs in the last couple of years. They used to be all over the place, now they’re almost gone.
I hope the spotted lanternflies (an import from China) go the same way.
It only killed the weak ones. The others will replace them with strong bugs.
Definitely not the case here in Northern Virginia. It got below zero for one night, and there were a couple more nights in the single digits. That’s not long enough to kill 95% of the stink bugs. I would guess less than 50% from my observations and there still are a lot of them around.
Well that’s the problem with politicians, their stink gets on everything they come in contact with... ...
