I stood behind a worn shopping center outside of Crystal Springs, Florida, looking for the refuge where a hundred manatees were gathered for winter. I found them clustered in the emerald-colored spring, trying to enjoy a wedge of sunlight and avoid the hordes of people like me, boxing them in on kayaks and tour boats, leering over wooden decks. The nearby canals were lined with expensive homes and docks with jetskis. One manatee breached the water for a breath, and I could see the propeller scar on its back.
2018 was the second deadliest year on record for manatees. Like many of our coastal species, theyre vulnerable to habitat loss and warming seas, which are more hospitable to algal blooms and red tide. Science has given us the foresight we need to make decisions that will reduce the future suffering of other species and ourselves, but we dont heed it. Why?
Studies show that humans dont respond well to abstract projections. We overvalue short-term benefits, such as driving SUVs, burning coal and building waterfront real estate. We choose these extravagances even though they impede beneficial long-term outcomes, such as saving threatened species, or reducing the intensity of climate change.

Isn’t it universal to be opposed to the idiotic construction in areas that are prone to flooding? We all end up paying, between disaster relief costs and higher insurance rates.
The Russians can detonate the nuke in one of their drone subs and cause the same damage, pretty much anywhere on the East Coast, or the West Coast.
Hmmm, come to think of it...
We're not doing that. Coastal construction and the cost of it should include engineering to protect those communities from know inevitable impacts.
At least the fishings good...

Rising oceans means more manatee habitat....
I was just up at Crystal River springs two weeks ago to swim with the manatees no less. I wonder if she’s bummed because she went on Sat, 9 Feb rather than 10 Feb. We went 10 Feb and it was terrific. The manatees don’t mind people at all and we even had one playing with us for over an hour. If they don’t like you they move off and there are plenty of blocked off areas in the springs for them to rest with underwater demarcations preventing divers from going.
9 Feb. the guides said there was one manatee in the springs due to the warm weather. 10 Feb the springs had plenty of them due to the front.
From the article it appears the author believes the canal houses run over manatees. The whole area is full of no wake zones -as is most of their areas in FL.
She’s obviously a recent FL transplant. Rambling on because she knows she has no point or argument to make. Just the usual eco-nut sloganeering pabulum.
“I didnt know they flew south like the birds. /sarc”
You don’t know Manatees.
Good Lord, what idiocy!
Manatees cant survive for long in cold water. If any species would hugely benefit from warming seas, it would be the manatee. Sheesh...

If manatees could vote, they would vote for warming seas. They are constantly seeking warm waters because they have very little body fat (their shape is due to their very large lungs).
I just use Lib, saves a lot of typing.
The Guardian, as usual is a joke.
Sea levels have been rising ever since the end of the last ice age. The level rise is essentially linear, rising around 4 mm/year. The trend shows NO increase since 1900. None. Period.
You only get a change in the rise levels if you cheat. Which, of course, is what progressives do since science is most definitely not on their side.
Can’t spell D-lusional without a “D” out in front.
The world is doomed and no one sees it but you, Megan. The best thing for you to do is go up into the mountains and live in a cave and live off berries and grass for the rest of your life.
Dang I guess Ill tell my son the house he bought in Florida wont be beachfront property soon. He will be devastated /s
As did folks from Asia walk into North America then into central and South America? As in folks that walked from main Europe to the British isles? Before glow bull warming caused sea levels to rise due to Dino farts?
Climate change is a religion. I am surprised the “Green Church” priests don’t wear emerald colored frocks and give blessing to Gaia.
You mean several billion dollars of improvement?
