80-Pound Dog Attacks a Top Runner a Mile Away From Half Marathon Finish
Runner's World ^ | February 14, 2019 | Jacob Meschke

Julie Stackhouse’s goal last Sunday was to win the Donna Half Marathon, a popular race that weaves through the coastal communities of Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach east of Jacksonville, Florida.

Stackhouse, a Jacksonville local, had good reason to think she could break the tape—she’s won the race twice in past years, and has notched victories in the marathon and relay, too.

But even before she came face-to-face with an aggressive dog, Stackhouse knew she wasn’t going to win. She estimates her canine encounter slowed her down only around 45 seconds in total, but her impressive finishing time of 1:25:54—enough to earn fourth place—was more than three minutes slower than the race’s winner.

Stackhouse was cruising along at around a 6:30 pace with about a mile to go in the race when the bull-terrier mix came at her. She heard the dog at the same time she saw it coming from her right.

“About 80 pounds, it was aggressive, snarling, barking, growling. It was coming to attack, I knew right away,” Stackhouse told Runner’s World. “I instantly shifted from mile-to-go race mode to fight or flight. I needed to avoid it as best as possible.”

The dog, which Stackhouse said was unleashed, bumped her legs hard, causing her to stumble. But she popped right back up as the dog came at her from the left. When it tried to bite at her face, she moved her left arm up to protect herself, and the dog’s jaws latched on. It was then that the people who Stackhouse thinks were the dog’s owners—though she never got a good look at them in the chaos—pinned the terrier down and allowed her to sprint away.

If people want dogs they need to keep them under control all the time. You can’t sue trash that doesn’t have any money so what to do?

I’ve seen many videos following a pit bull bloodbath wherein the owner shrugs helplessly while saying, “He got out....”

They say he got out of his kennel, his pen, his cage, his yard, the owners car, the owners house, off his chain, out of his collar, out of his harness, out of his muzzle. With that shrug, they imply....well there’s nothing I could have done to stop it. They are not pets and should not be allowed to menace the public.

A young man I knew explained that the stray pit bull he found chewed the wire pen he put her in so much the wire broke and pierced her face, he had to pin her in his arms to stop her from thrashing while he tried to remove the wire poking through her flesh. The vet bill was high - he stopped putting the dog in a pen reasoning she could not be penned up safely. She ran away.

I believe pits violate the pet contract. They hunt people if they get out and apparently can’t be restrained, according to their owners. Therefore -I consider them wildlife which require special licensing and permits, enclosures etc.

Hey, I read the article!

“In the aftermath, the Atlantic Beach Police fined the owners, confirmed the dog’s rabies vaccination, and issued a citation.”

Dogs are territorial pack hunters, but their bad behavior isn't their fault, it's their owners.

Owners who allow their dogs in public unleashed should be fined and have their dogs taken away.

It's inexcusable, and I say this as a current and long-time large dog owner. Public streets aren't farms or dog-parks.

Please back up sweeping generalizations. Thank you.
Excerpt: https://www.dogsbite.org/dangerous-dogs-pit-bull-owners.php

“Pit bull owners ::

Studies show that pit bull owners employ strategies to disguise the true nature of the breed by engaging in distortions, denial and overcompensation and by projecting blame after attacks.
Not normal dog owners

To understand the experience of owning a negatively perceived dog, Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy did a case study on pit bull owners that was published in 2000. Researchers found that with “outlaw” breeds, such as pit bulls, the human-dog relationship is sociologically more complex than previously known. Owners of pit bulls, they discovered, directly feel the stigma targeted at their breed and resort to various tactics to mitigate it. These strategies included:

“passing their dogs as breeds other than pit bulls, denying that their behavior is biologically determined, debunking adverse media coverage, using humor, emphasizing counter-stereotypical behavior, avoiding stereotypical equipment or accessories, taking preventive measures, or becoming breed ambassadors.”1

The study is sympathetic to pit bull owners and makes unsourced claims, but does show the basis of pro-pit bull propaganda. Strategies identified by the researchers are the same strategies employed by pro-pit bull groups to stop a municipality from enacting a pit bull law. For instance, pit bull advocates will claim that a pit bull cannot be identified, that there is a media conspiracy against pit bulls and that pit bulls are “just big babies” that only want to “lick you to death.”

That sounds completely appropriate to me. I don’t understand anyone who wants a “pet” that isn’t. Instead they re just an animal.

Our neighbor has a rottweiler and a big something and a little something. When they get out they go on a tear. They are hunting and they kill. Killed a calf this last year. They all need to be put down.
