Captain Marvel Movie In Trouble? Drops Whopping 80M
Cosmic Book News ^ | 02/15/2019 | Matt McGloin

I previously wrote how Brie Larson is a huge gamble for Disney and Kevin Feige - especially following the failure of Star Wars: The Last Jedi - and now the Captain Marvel movie looks to be in big, big trouble, unfortunately.

Back in January, following the NCAA trailer, it was reported that Captain Marvel was projected to have a massive $160 million opening weekend with some estimates even offering $180 million.

However, the bad news for Kevin Feige and Captain Marvel is that those projections have now dropped upwards of $80 million (note: article has been updated to reflect million and not percent), as it is reported the flick may only open around $100 million...

Honestly, I couldn’t care less about Captain Marvel.
I just want to see Avengers:End Game

Hopefully people are getting tired of the comic book movies, enough is enough, move on to something else.

$100 million opening weekend is the amount I read and that was on its first day of tracking, so it is not possible that it fell 60 or 80 million.

Just to let you know, $100 million opening weekend is something only a handful of movies have achieved, so it would be incredibly successful.

Also, to let you know, the stateside box office (which includes Canada), is only about 25% to 50% of its total box office. As the world has grown more affluent over the past few decades, the US box office is no longer the sole decider of success.

For example, Aquaman, through Friday, Feb 15 has made $330 million in the US, just 29% of its total world wide box office of $1 billion 122 million.

Have no fear, DC fan, Capt Marvel will do just fine.

Larson looks miscast. Can think of at least 10 actresses who would have been a better fit.

I recommend Alita: Battle Angel instead. Saw it today and thought it was very good. No SJW crap. Genuinely emotional, with CGI that really required excellent acting to work well. It was nicely done.

But unfortunately, it is assumed Captain Brie is going to come in and one punch Thanos cause gurrrl powerrrr. Hopefully, it will still be good because it’s probably the MCU’s swan song. Captain Brie comes along pushing for woke ass characters like Ms. Marvel and Riri Williams. Pray this movie bombs so Feige tells her to pound sand.

Would any of that impact a local theatre owner’s decision to play the movie on say, 1 screen or 2?

I’m not seeing any similarity to PC garbage at all. The character has ALWAYS been a female superhero since she was created MANY decades ago. It’s not like the crappy Ghostbusters reboot where they decided to flip the genders of the main characters solely to have “diversity” and thumb their nose at male viewers.

Complaining about Captain Marvel revolving around a female lead is akin to claiming Nancy Drew is feminist propaganda.

Yeah, not seeing how any of this is "feminist propaganda" simply by having a female lead. Faithfully adapting a product that has had a female lead since it was created DECADES ago is entirely different than CHANGING an existing franchise to bow to political correctness and making the lead female out of thin air to send a "message" to men.

"Ocean's 8" is politically correct nonsense.

Making a "Pippi Longstocking" movie is not.

I don't know why this concept is so hard for some people to grasp.

It works the same way with ethnicity or anything else.

Suddenly turning Little Orphan Annie (who has always been a little redheaded white girl) into a black girl at random so you can have more “diversity” in Hollywood is politically correct B.S.

Adapting “To Kill a Mockingbird” and depicting the guy on trial as a black man when the lead character has ALWAYS been a black man is not.

Carol Danvers has been a female superhero since she was created during the silver age of Marvel comics. Nothing insidious about having a cute gal kicking butt in action movie. I don’t care if the actress is a marxist SJW loon. So are 90% of the other actors in Hollywood. Gregory Peck was a communist loon, that doesn’t mean the movies he starred in were.

>> I still think it will suck...just like star wars did when Disney ruined it with PC nonsense. <<

Interesting thing about the Disney Star Wars movies... I was never a fan of JJ Abrams work so I said I was no hurry to see the new Star Wars movie he made.

Star Wars fans swore up and down back in Dec. 2015 and said it was awesome and amazing and 10X better than the prequels, and told me it wasn’t nostalgia talking like when told everyone the overhyped the Jar Jar Binks kiddie crap as amazing. This time, they promised, it really WAS a great movie.

I finally watched it on DVD about six months later. I thought it was decent but a shallow popcorn movie. I had no desire to see the sequel after Luke Skywalker’s much anticipated “reveal” at the end of the movie turned out to be a lame 10 second non-speaking cameo.

Now Star Wars fans who DID see the sequel retroactively say Disney “ruined” Star Wars and they want George Lucas back.

180o degree flip flop there.

When I hear “Captain Marvel” I think of that show “Shazam” which had a teenage boy driving around in a van with an old guy and when he said “SHAZAM” he turned into a grown man cheezy superhero. DJ you must have seen that. I don’t know where the hell I saw it, late night syndicated probably.

Anyway, Wonder Woman was pretty ok, I don’t see why this can’t be as well. Is any female superhero movie “feminist propaganda”? By definition all of them are gonna (super)chicks beating up on dudes.

Anticipated box office may affect the deal with the theater chain. They negotiate things like what percentage of the box office goes to the studio, and for how many weeks.
