Just wanted to get a Saturday afternoon thread going on being prepared with a bug out bag. My primary bag I carry in my car in the event I have to hoof it home and if I encounter problems along the way. I didn't list everything; but I am very interested in hearing what you carry and welcome constructive criticism of my setup. Lets talk and make our gear better.

Here is my first problem.
I can’t carry water (i.e., canteens always filled) in the winter due to being in the northeast and sub-zero temps. I guess I could less than fill my canteens so they don’t rupture; but I am relying on my water purification and the abundance of rivers streams in my locale. If I am at my place of business when SHTF, I can top off. Anyone have an idea about that?

I put one together around 25 years ago.

It is still sitting where I left it. Probably need to raid it for useful items as I am too old to bug out and it probably never was a real option.

If you live in a rural area like I do, you house is probably your best refuge.

A couple of changes of clothes and shoes. Three season stuff but also an old Carhartt coat with knit cap and a couple of pair of gloves.

An old pair of glasses, my previous prescription.

A bag of (stale) dog food so my dogs won't have to go hungry.

Various brands of power bars and stuff.

Oh yeah some money... I forget how much, I think I might have raided it to buy beer sometime or another.

And just my everyday carry gear bag that also has some stuff in it. Dental floss, etc.

My home here in the holler IS my bug out bag.

I’m not running anywhere. Unlike one famous FReeper, I have not built an ark to sail off in when the SHTF.

Will just stay put and do whatever the situation calls for.

Wherever you would bug out to is probably where you should already be.

I mighta missed it, but add a decent poncho for you, and a cheap bass pro shop poncho for a companion. Ponchos also cover all your gear and your battle rattle. Be the grey man.

Also, your bag needs to match the distance, duration and climate of getting home.

Lastly broken in sneakers are OK, but if it is raining or snowing, wet sneakers get uncomfortable fast.

Broken in, 100 mile waterproof boots in your vehicle are better.

Not going anywhere - if I can’t make it here, there is no where else to go. Plan on being a hill that others get to die on.

Compass, map, small LED flashlight. Socks in sandwich bags.

Wallet fresnel, spare glasses. Leather Work Gloves, cold weather cap.

Money won’t necessarily become immediately useless. Small denominations. Maybe $50-100?

A quick grab bag is actually a very good idea, in addition to a Mormon closet/room. So thanks for posting.

A requirement is a sub bag, locked away in your bank safe, home safe, or buried. It contains large and small denomination precious metal coins. Gold 1 oz coins are for large denomination $1k & up. Silver “junk” dimes or quarters are for easy tradeable $1& up coins.

A serious bag for nuclear survivability, contains a bowling ball size of junk silver, partitioned out for quick burying.

And never keep too much locked up or buried in a single place, as I believe Gerald Celente lost $100k of metals he did not actually possess.

10/22 carbine with folding stock and a thousandish rounds, 3 literally of water, 5 MREs, parachute line, machete, large Bowie knife, small pen knife, signalling mirror, flare pistol with 4 rounds, and a good sharp hook blade and fillet knife for skinning. Think that’s pretty much what I got

Personally I think a rifle would be a better choice than a shotgun.

Lighter overall, more accurate and better range.

Small backpacking stove.

I have a few but the one in the vehicle is an alcohol stove made from a can with a windscreen made from 16 oz empty beer cans.

Works fine and is superlight.

The ones that use the solid fuel tabs are fine too and you can use the tabs as fire starters when everything is wet.

I don’t have any plans to fight off hordes of zombie like people. There just are not that many in this area. My Grandchildren live too far away to worry about.

If a determined group of scum want to get me they probably will, Not that I wouldn’t put up a fight.

I have access to water and enough fruit trees to help out. I keep buying Mountain House meals but they are so good that I wind up eating them. Still I do have rice, beans, flour grits spam, etc. to last a long time.

I could survive Winter fairly well but Summer would be uncomfortable.
