Here is my first problem.
I can’t carry water (i.e., canteens always filled) in the winter due to being in the northeast and sub-zero temps. I guess I could less than fill my canteens so they don’t rupture; but I am relying on my water purification and the abundance of rivers streams in my locale. If I am at my place of business when SHTF, I can top off. Anyone have an idea about that?

Adding sugar to the water will depress the freezing point, but not by much. But adding pure grain alcohol - making say a 1/3 alcohol solution - will depress the freezing point quite a bit.
But then you’d either have to boil the alcohol off, or walk around drunk. So I wonder, is their anything safe you could add to water to get a meaningful freezing point depression?
Store water still useful outside of winter.
Good grief! Get powdered water!
Anyway, your water-purf tool/method should be relied over carrying too much water, unless you live in the desert. Weapons should be primary, whether blades or guns, followed by fire and food. Living in snow, you already have water, everywhere!
The plastic military canteens will swell instead of rupturing like the old metal ones; when we’d camp in the Catskills in the winter we’d bring them in our bags at night so they wouldn’t freeze. The real problem was cleaning the mess kits in partially-frozen streams; scrub quickly, because you start losing feeling below the elbows...
