For the past two days, Windows 10 users from around the world have been reporting that they are unable to connect to Windows Update. When they attempt to do so, Windows 10 will complain that they are unable to connect to the update service.

The wording of the error, shown below, indicates that this is an Internet connectivity issue, but others are not so sure.
"We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet"
Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer as to what is causing this issue and some feel it is related to a botched Windows Defender update and others state that this could be a DNS issue.
Windows blogger Günter Born feels that this issue could be related to Windows Defender as numerous people have reported having issues installing a Windows Defender update before receiving this error in Windows Update.
At the same time, in my tests on 4 different Windows 10 computers running 1803 through 1809 with varying software configurations, none of them are having this issue. They also had no problems installing the latest Windows Defender 1.285.558.0 update that was released this morning.(Image)
In fact the only way I could trigger this update was to set my DNS server settings to use a server I did not have access to or did not exist. This leads me to believe this is some sort of network connectivity issue.
Many users on outage pages and Twitter are stating that this is an ISP DNS issue...reported that switching their DNS servers to Google's 8.8.8.8 DNS service solved their problems.

Turn the usual scenario around.
If a person’s first computer ran on Linux Mint, they would be perfectly happy with it. After a couple of years, move them to Windows and they would tell you it’s weird and hard to get used to.
We're still using Windows 7 here... I've been reluctant to ditch what we're familiar with for Windows 10. From what I understand (I'm not that computer-savvy), Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7 after 2019. Should we upgrade to Windows 10 within the next few months? Thanks.
I use defender and just before posting this I checked for updates. Found on for Windows Defender and it downloaded and installed no issue.
It advised everyone else to NOT download it from the Update website.
I got my auto-installed 1809 Version about five days ago.
I allow Microsoft to monitor everything in my computer - because I'm old and have nothing to hide.
I don't allow them to download beta-versions of new software, but they usually install the newest versions of Windows on my computer a week or two before they allow mass downloads.
So far, 1809 runs fine...
EXCEPT! - I keep having glitches with the Microsoft Edge browser on Free Republic.
After each new version, they fix one or two Edge problems, but create one or two new problems!

And that is my whole argument, Why should MS have complete control over what I do on “MY” computer even though I paid good money to own it outright. It’s like Ford telling you what you can and cannot haul in the truck you bought from them. You never truly own the truck when this is the case, Ford does.
It’s their abusive “business model” I have a problem with more than the software. The fact that the truck has run like crap since it was new just compounds this animosity.
Have to go to a third party google to fix it? The concept is broken... That would embarrass me as a OS provider. lol

Then we have the "contest" btwn Linux threads and Windows threads.
And your pro-Linux counterpart gets flack for posting lengthy tutorials about coding and terminal commands.
But since computers are such useful tools, without which there would be no FR, then why should they not have a place on it? Which could extend into hardware.
No contest at all... I personally appreciate the windows threads because without them I would have never know about these things even happening. I would be oblivious and ignorant to it because of my immunity status. I find them educational.

That's most likely the Edge rendering engine. Microsoft has finally admitted out loud that it sucks, and they're switching to the Chromium engine (Google's, as used in the Chrome browser and others). So the glitches should go away in a few months.
In the meantime, FWIW, I use Firefox for FR with good results.
We've had occasional hardware threads, but they're rare. We could use more.
WSUS is an M$ application that admins use to download all the updates their organization will use onto one device, which eliminates the need for each individual PC to have to access M$'s update servers (= saves both bandwidth and CPU power).
WSUS Offline is a (non-M$) freeware that can perform the same role on your home network. One Windows PC downloads all the updates any of your Windows PCs will need (at least as far back as Win7). Then you can distribute those updates as you see fit, either by network or by removable media (thumb drive, etc).
Well, there is a lot of buzz about the new Ryzen CPUs, including those with integrated graphics.
With PC part picker you might be able to(prayerfully) build a quite decent new computer for about 400.00, less the OS.
