“Then what is the purpose of having a security guard?”

To prevent you from leaving without buying an extended warranty.

LOL!

***************************************************
This is a great point -
hmmmm ...... Maybe hiring preferences should be given to underage yutes and “uninvited visitors” (illegal aliens).
Cue the metrosexual public service announcement voicetrack - “It is the compassionate thing to do - give these underprivileged persons a badge and make them feel important.”
AHHH! OHhhhh .... !
That was just another bad dream!
Glad I woke up./sarc

SICK TO DEATH of CORPORATE SELLOUTS.

Worst Buy is another place to BUY NOTHING, EVER!

Looking forward EVEN MORE now to seeing the local store close.

For now we’ll tolerate Amazon .. we will get to laugh at their demise in a few years.

This is BS! The guy deserves a medal and a raise.

I thought Best Buy was out of business already, at this rate they will be soon enough. Bunch of pussies...

“Our policy is clear, employees are not to chase potential criminals outside of the store. Chasing an individual in the parking lot creates a safety risk that isn’t worth taking, regardless of how noble an employee’s intention is.”

What a microcosm!

Best Buy has "smart" border sensors (the sensors at the door that alarm when you take product outside that hasn't been scanned).

Best Buy has drones (the in-store cameras that watch people).

But, once the person illegally exits the store with merchandise, the border security (Best Buy Security Guard) is not allowed to "touch" the person.

What good is all that "smart" border security if all it does is alert security to an illegal? By the time security arrives, the illegal has already cleared the border and is safe.

All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to stand by and do nothing.

I can understand where you are coming from in your comment.

On the other hand, the good Samaritan here may have saved some ones life by apprehending the perp (though we will never know). Everyone faced with such a choice must make their own decision based on the circumstances they see, but I am thankful there are still some out there willing to “do the right thing” in an upside down society.

“Then what is the purpose of having a security guard?”

They are like the bank guard in the commercial who tells the customers, “it’s a robbery.” then throws his gun out on the bank floor!

I don’t agree with the store’s firing of this employee.

But, a retail store where I worked had the same policy: We weren’t allowed to touch or chase a shoplifter.

That policy didn’t seem to make sense at first. But then, the year I worked there, an incident happened at a different store location: A group of employees tried to hold down a shoplifter while waiting for police, and the man died. And that’s only one example of a shoplifter dying at a retail store while employees were holding him.

Also, at another store, near me, a customer was being arrested by a police officer just for standing outside the store, and a bunch of customers decided to help the officer - and the man died while everyone had their hands on him.

So, the policy does make sense: The store doesn’t want to be sued; you don’t want to kill someone for shoplifting (or just standing around); you don’t want to go to prison; and you don’t want to be hurt, either. It’s not worth it. Loss Prevention can send video and info to the news media to air on TV; sometimes shoplifters are caught that way.

If I interpret the story correctly, the criminal didn’t steal anything from BB. The security guard happened to intervene in an attempted arrest gone bad in the parking lot.

Security guards are there to protect property, not people.

This is not news.

They are security monitors. They are only allowed to tell them when someone is stealing.

Good to know that Best Buy still doesn’t want my business.

Firing him forces me to continue my “No Best Buy” policy.

Too bad... we were friends once...

You are EXACTLY right.

Every security guard i’ve Ever worked with is told they don’t wear bulletproof vests and the most important crime stopping tool is their radio or cell phone.

Nothing in any building I ever worked in that just has security guards was worth getting a splinter over. I’ve worked in places with armed guards. That was different.
