“Our policy is clear, employees are not to chase potential criminals outside of the store. Chasing an individual in the parking lot creates a safety risk that isn’t worth taking, regardless of how noble an employee’s intention is.”

What a microcosm!

Best Buy has "smart" border sensors (the sensors at the door that alarm when you take product outside that hasn't been scanned).

Best Buy has drones (the in-store cameras that watch people).

But, once the person illegally exits the store with merchandise, the border security (Best Buy Security Guard) is not allowed to "touch" the person.

What good is all that "smart" border security if all it does is alert security to an illegal? By the time security arrives, the illegal has already cleared the border and is safe.

If I interpret the story correctly, the criminal didn’t steal anything from BB. The security guard happened to intervene in an attempted arrest gone bad in the parking lot.
