NEW YORK -- It may sound too good to be true, but researchers now say indulging in that piece of chocolate is actually the best cure for your cough.

A research group from a university in England randomly prescribed more than 160 patients either regular cough medicine or a chocolate-based medicine.

Patients on the chocolate-based medication reported improving more quickly than those on regular cough syrup.

Right, how many kids do you see coughing on Easter or Halloween. Or women on Valentine's Day? /s

"I wanna get chocolate wasted!"

But cough medicine may have alcohol in it.

Patients on the chocolate-based medication reported improving more quickly than those on regular cough syrup.

It could be that patients were more willing to take the medicine................

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

Now for some details, left out by the MSM.

A total of 163 people were observed by researchers at the University of Hull in Yorkshire in the new study recently. Those that were prescribed chocolate-based medications for their cough reported a significant improvement of their condition within two days, compared to those that were using codeine-based medication for the same ailment. In addition, many of the people being studied were able to stop all treatments for their cough early due to the effectiveness of this new chocolate-based treatment.

The chocolate-based medication, known as ROCOCO, is believed to be effective as a result of an alkaloid in cocoa that can “relieve irritation and inflammation more effectively than codeine,” according to WHDH 7 News.

The new trial medicine has been licensed under the name Unicough and was shown to “reduce both cough frequency and sleep disruption within two days,”

“We have just seen the results of the largest real-world study of an over-the-counter cough remedy ever undertaken in Europe,” said Professor Alyn Morice from Hull University. Morice is the head of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull as well as a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Cough.

...the Alkaloid called theobromine that is found in cocoa is better than codeine at suppressing the cough reflex.

Researchers in the new study also believe that the demulcent properties of cocoa help ease coughing. This means that the chocolate-based medication coats the throat more effectively than codeine-based medications. As a result of this, nerve endings are protected, decreasing the urge to cough.

However, merely drinking a cup of hot cocoa will not likely have the same effect as the medication used in the study Alyn Morice warns. This is because the liquid is not thick enough to be effective.

“Slowly sucking on a piece of chocolate may provide some relief, but I think it is the way the chocolate compounds work with other ingredients in the linctus which make it so effective,” Morice explains.

Slowly sucking on a piece of chocolate may provide some relief, but I think it is the way the chocolate compounds work with other ingredients in the linctus which make it so effective.

Apart from the cocoa itself, the demulcent effect ensures the other cough-calming ingredients — diphenhydramine, levomenthol and ammonium chloride — are in contact with sensitised nerve endings for as long as possible.

Definitions: A demulcent (derived from the Latin: demulcere "caress") is an agent that forms a soothing film over a mucous membrane, relieving minor pain and inflammation of the membrane.[1] However, they generally help for less than 30 minutes.

Medical Definition of linctus: a syrupy or sticky preparation containing medicaments exerting a local action on the mucous membrane of the throat So its the sticky that makes the medicine work?

Unicough is available in selected UK Superdrug, Lloyds and independent pharmacies, £8.95.

Cool. Chocolate is the number two thing I eat most of,
a distant second to cheese.

I would never have convinced my Grandmother of that 50 years ago. She always recommended some horrid yellow medicine called , I kid you not; “666”. That was the formula. It tasted like liquified Ajax cleaner, with a little salt added.

We were also given “Father John’s Cough Medicine” which was at least tolerable. It tasted like a very old, very diluted malted milk shake.

Chocolate actually makes me cough sometimes. Maybe the dosage isn’t high enough. In the interest of science, I’m going to test that theory.
