VLADIMIR Putin has drafted in soldiers to investigate a “collapsed mountain” in a remote region of Siberia amid suggestions it may have been caused by a UFO crash-landing.
Whatever the cause, the event resulted in a massive rockfall which has blocked the nearby Bureya river, and left several villages at risk of flooding. So much rock was shifted it would fill 13,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools, say experts. Meanwhile, the falling 34 million cubic metres of debris left a gash in a mountain which could swallow up all the water used if every American showered at the same time.
A defence ministry source said a group of specialists is en route “to conduct reconnaissance work” at the site, where the rocks fell some 1,280 ft on to the valley floor.
The source added: “Given the significant size of the landslide, units of engineers and railway forces with special equipment, as well as army and transport aviation, will be involved in clearing the rock.”

I think that's the Azores. There's a mountain there that has a huge fault running through it that runs parallel to the eastern seaboard of the US.
Geologists who've studied it, say that if it ever slips, that mountainside will go into the Atlantic, which will send a tsunami to our east coast.
Another interesting comparison is to a very large building. I found an estimate online of the Willis Tower in Chicago, at 1,798,000 cu. meters. So, call this collapse volume equal to roughly 19 UN-collapsed Willis Towers.
I also found a reference to the World Trade Center at approx. 1,700,000 cu. meters per Tower. So the WTC collapse (both towers, less the adjoining structures) would be almost exactly 1/10 of this mountain. Granted that these structures are obviously (were) not solid.
If every American got up on a one foot high platform, and if we all jumped off at the same time, that would start an earthquake that would knock-down the rest of the mountain in Siberia.

Note the MUCH larger volume of material involved: 350 cu. kilometers (La Palma) is roughly 4 orders of magnitude greater, if I did the math right...(!)
I looked around a bit, and tend to agree with Wikipedia: A reasonable estimate for a “worst case” La Palma tsunami when it reaches the mid-US Atlantic coast is 9.6 meters.
Call it 32 ft. on the Florida east coast.
That’s still QUITE a problem, depending on the tide then ongoing, etc. Luckily, such a collapse is considered not likely, soon. (Gotta hope the “considerers” are right.)
But what if one of our enemies decide to “help” it along.
Incidentally, speaking of slides (of sorts) and tsunamis, Mt. St. Helens really did a number on nearby Spirit Lake.

The kinds of processes that would trigger an "all at once slide" are not easily amenable, to, say, planting a couple medium size nukes in an inconspicuous way. Moreover, some estimates posit that another 10k years of so of accumulated deposits from the volcano would be needed. Granted, Anak Krakatau might cause a little rethinking of that?
MY worry would be a significant renewal of volcanic activity, causing a major explosion from below, and then a large slide. The geologic record seems to indicate that's unlikely (no record of such), but, MO Nature has a way of pulling surprises. Who, several days out, predicted as much as 20" of snow near the University of Missouri, last weekend?
I saw a program about the La Palma fault years and years ago. At the time, geologists claimed that the fault was steadily getting wider, though they couldn't predict when it would finally slip.
I can only imagine it's gotten wider since then. I can only imagine what a 32 foot tsunami would do to New York city.

Yes - about. Interesting what a bit of rounding does to that number when you cube it. One meter is about 3 feet and gives your 918 million cubic feet. Less rounding, with 1m=3.28ft gives 1199.8 million cubic feet.
The huge Oso Landslide in the state of Washington four years ago was 270 million cubic feet. (Seeing that in person and how big it is - with this Russian one being 4.4 times larger!)
The building/hangar where they build Boeing aircraft in Everett Washington has a volume of 469 million cubic feet.
Mount Saint Helens after it blew lost about 278 BILLION cubic feet of material.
This is why UFO’s should be licensed and have to undergo vehicle inspections every year. There is a lot at stake if something goes wrong.
For crying out loud, what if one goes into hyperspace and punches a hole in the sun. It could be very bad.
