Millions of Americans Are Wrong About Having a Food Allergy, Study Suggests
gizmodo ^ | 01/07/2018 | Ed Cara

19 percent of the nationally representative group reported having a food allergy. But only 10.8 percent said they had symptoms consistent with an allergic reaction to food, such as hives, swelling of the lips or throat, and chest pain. The main culprits behind these allergies were shellfish, milk, and tree nuts. Those who didn’t have a convincing food allergy instead reported symptoms like stomach cramps, a stuffy nose, or nausea.

The findings, published Friday in JAMA Network Open, roughly match up to estimates from other studies, including those that confirmed a person’s food allergy with testing or medical records. In terms of the U.S. population, the study estimates, there are about 26 million adult Americans with a food allergy—and there are likely nearly as many Americans who wrongly say they have one. But that doesn’t mean huge swaths of people are pretending to have food allergies; it’s just that we could be a little confused about the terminology.

It’s likely then, the researchers say, that people might be mixing up a food intolerance or sensitivity with a food allergy.

Only half of the group said they had an official diagnosis from a physician. And while many of us develop food allergies early on in childhood, just about half reported finding out about their allergy as adults.

This lack of diagnosis is concerning, because food allergies aren’t something you want to be in the dark about. ...In the study sample, 38 percent of people with food allergies said they had to visit the emergency room at least once in their lives as a result, while around a quarter had a current prescription of epinephrine, which can prevent anaphylaxis.

Milk always makes me feel good. I really should drink more of it, actually.

Whachu doing Mr. Fireman? Keeping watch? Thank you.

It’s good to know that people like you are out there.

The obesity problem is only somewhat related to diet.

Primarily, Americans only get a tiny fraction of the exercise most people got in their day to day lives throughout most of human history.

Think of “labor saving devices” as also being “tub of lard transformation devices.”

BTW, thank you for saving lives. There ARE those out there that really appreciate this kind of thing.

Thank you for that. I have been retired for quite a while now. Unfortunately, we lost most of the people we tried to save during my career. Defibrillators save a lot of lives... CPR sometimes, but not nearly as often as people seem to think.

One time we were on a fragile little old lady, by the time the paramedics showed up, every rib bone in her chest was broken by CPR. After the paramedics gave her medication and shocked her, we got a pulse. After the paramedics left, my crew was high fiving and congratulating themselves. Maybe I shouldn't have because they had done exactly what we were trained to do, but I asked them how long they thought she would now live and what would her quality of life be? The lady was put on life support at the hospital, she never regained consciousness, the machines keeping her alive were unplugged a week later.

But I did like the job and those who tried hard and had big hearts sometimes did a lot of good... often in ways that you would never expect.

Bravo to your father. I’ve always be a history buff. Especially our own military. I’ve heard about chipped beef on toast (’’s**t on a shingle’’) from so many vets, particularly WW2 vets. What was so terrible about it?

I saved the the lives of at least 5 people in my life. Mostly water rescues.

The Lord just comes and says you are the only one present. Now go do it. I know what that means.

I’m much older now, and I hope He doesn’t call on me again.

Nonetheless, I will do my best, even at cost. It’s what we’re made of.

Thank you, brother.

May He bless you you and yours.

That’s a sad story, but you guys tried. It’s the intention, not the outcome, sometimes. I don’t know.

Anyways, nice meeting a hero like you. I’m not or never was a para, but I appreciate all you do and have done.

Thank you.

Primarily, Americans only get a tiny fraction of the exercise most people got in their day to day lives throughout most of human history.

You make a good point, however most of the “exercise” people get these days help keep the pounds off more by keeping people from stuffing their faces rather than burning calories. Even a serious aerobic workout typically burns just a small amount of calories when compared to an extra hamburger or even a candy bar. A two hundred pound person walking 3 miles at 3 mph typically burns less than the calories in a single candy bar or small bag of chips.

Many of the people I would describe as heroes are those who go through their lives doing good for others and making a difference. And congratulations on the lives that you saved. Five is more than most firemen or women could claim.

I have wondered about the seeming explosion of people allergic to peanuts and can only guess that this allergy wasn’t widely known until it could be researched and verified.

Thanks for that. I try to keep it a secret.

But you firemen save more lives than you think you do.

Breaded calves liver is awesome.

Can do the same with chicken livers which are a tenth of the price.

Calamondin:

Had one in a huge pot that bore 2x year. Lived to be over fifty years old and probably would have lived longer if we could have repotted it, but we grew too old to move it in and out every summer/winter. It was already quite large and very heavy.

Produced pounds of fruit, even potted. However, there is a bitter undertaste to the little oranges. It was ok for marinades and I liked them straight off the tree, but nothing special. The wood itself is also quite fragrant when pruned. When the dropped leaves got caught up in the vacuum, the citrus smell was pronounced.

It just literally dried up and died over the course of about 2-3 weeks. Very hardy, though. Down in the Keys, they’re considered a trash tree.

Super picky about dining choices.
