San Jose mayor hit by SUV while riding bike, suffers broken bones

"He's a bit banged up, but it's nothing overly serious," a representative with the mayor's office said, according to the Bay Area's FOX 2.

The mayor was believed to be suffering a broken collarbone, a broken chest bone and injuries to his neck and back, the Mercury News of San Jose reported, citing Liccardo's best friend, Carl Guardino.

The accident happened when the driver of the 2002 SUV was making a right turn, said Guardino, who is president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

“This is the fear of every cyclist,” said Guardino, who often bikes with the mayor and was himself struck by a car in the past and severely injured. “Cyclists are flesh and blood on two wheels … and they always lose” to a vehicle.

Back and neck implicate spinal problems. Broken collarbone is hard to heal. Not sure what broken "chest bone" means but probably sternum.

"Banged up a bit" is an understatement.

I bicycle commuted in the Seattle area for almost 20 years. The reason I stopped: Cell phone texting.

It’s that simple. It’s always 2:00 Saturday morning on our roads. As a cyclist that is a very dangerous time to be on the roads.

I guess the driver didn't know the way to San Jose...

I have a mountain bike and a road bike but rarely ride on the road even though I live out in the country and encounter more tractors than cars. I prefer gravel and dirt trails on the mountain bike. I’m down right now due to a badly sprained foot with torn tendons and ligaments that might take four months to heel so I’m really missing my rides.

I’m not much into riding in traffic. When the road bike goes out it usually goes to the local Greenway.

I have the same opinion regarding motorcycles. Trees don’t jump out in front of you, cars are another thing.

I wonder if the driver was a Wetdreamer. The article doesn’t say but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Unlikely.

The last line in the link is: “The driver of the vehicle pulled over and stayed at the scene to cooperate with police, officials said,”

I know a fellow who was big into Harleys, ran a group, had the tricked out bike, and gave it up and got rid of his Harley because it has become so dangerous out there with people texting and distracted.

It is almost like a death wish to be on two wheels on the road these days, IMO.

When we first got married over 30 years ago we had a big motorcycle that we liked to ride in the Smokey’s. After one too many close calls we sold it and stopped riding. WAY too dangerous now.

My first thought. Those statements are written by people who’ve never been traumatized by a traffic accident.

Three and a half years ago a friend and his wife were out for a ride on his Harley when an oncoming pickup made a left turn in front of them. He and his bike ended up under the truck and his wife flew over the truck into oncoming traffic where she was hit and killed instantly..

Friend was hospitalized for several months and and he still faces more surgery.....

Prayers for your friend! It’s crazy out there now. I see people driving and texting all the time. That’s one reason I started mountain biking instead of road biking. The closest I have come to a collision in the woods on the bike was when a white-tail deer jumped off the bank and froze right in front of me. That might have hurt but nothing like colliding with a car. When we gave up the motorcycle I started mountain biking. Much safer and better for the health.

Police Chief made some enemies w/in dept. re: pensions/pay and was well-known biker. Possible hit / message. Not as strong as those given in Puebla, Mexico.

Sort of the same ailments Trump supporters received when they attended his rally there and the cops were invisible? Medals for the driver.

Broken collarbone is hard to heal

Yup, good six months for healthy adults to fully heal a clavicle break. I broke left clavicle couple years ago; I elected for surgery and a plate so I could recover quicker. 8 screws and the plate later recovery was cut down to weeks, not months.

The accident happened when the driver of the 2002 SUV was making a right turn ...

There is the possibility that the Mayor was at fault.

I certainly hope it was not one of those "Undocumented Dreamer Refugees" that was handed a Driver's License and Voter Registration after going to the head of the Spanish Only line at the DMV.

It might make it harder for him to get insurance.

Was hit in Tacoma by a right hand Turner who never signaled or saw me. Flew 20 feet, landed on my helmet, and was only scraped badly.

My first thought was that either the mayor was in the driver’s blind spot, or was passing on the right of the car near an intersection or driveway.

When I cycled, I always gave the right of way to the larger vehicle, even though I might have had the right of way and making sure my giving up that right of way didn’t create another hazard for other unseen drivers.

If a driver rode in front of me, inadvertently placing me in his blind spot, I would slow down, even to a stop and pulling off the road, rather than risk an accident (where I would not prevail).

I was hit three times by right hand turners. In all three cases I saw it coming. In all three cases I didn’t go down. In all three cases the car was very badly scratched up.

I felt especially bad for the guy in the new Porsche carerra. It was a beautiful red. My left pedal caught on the top of his wheel well and I forced it until it broke through.

It was bumper to bumper stopped traffic for about half a mile and he was trying to take a last minute turn to get out of the mess.

I didn’t stop.
