fter an absence from Italy of nearly 500 years, beavers are back.
The species, which was once widespread across Europe, has been spotted in Italy’s northerly region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The animals are believed to have wandered over the border from neighbouring Austria or possibly Slovenia.
An adult beaver was filmed by a camera trap in a forest near Tarvisio, a town that lies in the triangle where Italy, Austria and Slovenia converge.
“The reason beavers disappeared from Italy is simple – for hundreds of years they were trapped for their fur and also prized for their meat,” Paolo Molinari, a wildlife biologist working in the region, told The Telegraph.

A couple years ago I was watching the “New Scandinavian Cooking” TV Show on PBS. All episodes are filmed in the great outdoors of you guessed it...Scandinavia. Amazingly beautiful part of the world which is why we used to watch it, food not so much. Well when the host mention on this one episode that they would be grilling up delicious Beaver I switched between horror and laughter. Couldn't bear to watch it. Doesn't remotely sound good, switched the channel beautiful Fjord or not.

Not even a single mention of what it was like for a boy to grow up in 1950’s TV America being known to everyone in school as “the Beaver”.

The article doesn’t mention one aspect of the giant beaver’s demise: predation by man.
If the Italians loved to eat beaver, surely the Paleo-Indians did also. Who wouldn’t love to catch a giant beaver? I’m sure it would go a long ways and feed the entire tribe for a week or more, depending on the weather and preservation technologies of the time.
Giant beaver pemmican and jerky would have been very sustaining.

I think the question is are they the old fashioned kind or the modern kind.....
Don’t laugh. Beaver is good eating. The tail is greasy but the body is good tender meat. Muskrat is better, like a tender squirrel. Possum is greasy and foul tasting all the way through.
Meat quality is normally tied to the diet of the animal. Beaver and muskrat are vegans where the possum is mostly a meat eater.
Remember this if you decide to turn cannibal and pick only vegans to eat.

I believe we’ll see more of this as human populations contract and become more urbanized. In my town in northeastern NJ we’re seeing deer again for the first time probably in a century; people are totally unprepared for the damage they’ll do - and have no idea how to drive around them.
