Vanity ^ | December 29, 2018 | CaliforniaCraftBeer

Posted on 12/29/2018 7:38:05 PM PST by CaliforniaCraftBeer

You have 2 days (48 hours) to pay. (I have a special code, and at the moment I know that you have read this email).

If I don't get bitcoins, I will send your video to all your contacts, including family members, colleagues, etc. However, if I am paid, I will immediately destroy the video, and my trojan will be destruct someself.

If you want to get proof, answer "Yes!" and resend this letter to youself. And I will definitely send your video to your any 11 contacts.

Funny as heck. I’d laugh at them too. I don’t watch porn, I don’t run windows or macos (linux, behind a formidable firewall), and I don’t even have a webcam. I’d probably yank their chain ...

I knew it was a bogus email because I covered my computer’s camera with a band-aid.

I've gotten two of these emails. One of them was so badly worded, so grammatically incorrect, so ridiculously pathetic that it was just laughable.

I lost passwords years ago on some "who cares" accounts and they were picking these up from password sites. I had changed the passwords (also years ago) after the hack became public so it was immediately obvious it was bogus crap.

I use two-factor authentication whenever possible on all high-value sites.

Some perhaps-helpful sites on this scam...

“BTW I hope this website isn’t being monitored by the Federal Govermnent,”

I would be highly insulted if it wasn’t. And can you imagine how embarrassing it would be if all your friends were accused of being subversives and YOU weren’t? No thanks.

“But they have your password.”

Unless you’re joking - what makes you think that?

But they have your password.

The password of mine they had was one of my really old "general use" passwords. They must have gotten it from one of the zillion hacks they've done over the years... perhaps a photography discussion forum or someplace.

Anyway... my PC doesn't have a webcam...if they have a video of me at my computer that would be some accomplishment!

I was referring to the story in the link to my post. The OP may not have his password stolen in his particular case

“The OP may not have his password stolen in his particular case”

What gives it away as just another spam-generated conjob attempt is the claim it was sent from “his own address”. Spoofing an address is one of the oldest tricks in the book for scammers.

“What’s happening here is that spammers are spoofing your email address in an attempt to bypass any kind of spam protection you have. Unfortunately, depending on how your business’ spam protections are set up, this is actually a decently effective trick. You didn’t provide a ton of details about what you do, but I think the first, best step is to go bug your IT team—if you have one—and get them to set up server-side rules that check to see if an email is being sent from outside your organization but using your organization’s domain as part of the sender’s (fake) email address.”
https://lifehacker.com/how-to-handle-email-spam-from-yourself-1826325674

When I was new to the internet and got mail from my own address - then I checked it out - it just looked on the surface as if it were from my addy. Comparable to someone spoofing a phone number to 911 to get the person with the real phone number “swatted”.
Relatively common trick.

My guilties pleasure is watching cat videos, and videos of things like people trying to walk on ice, so I was not concerned. Especilly since the email had “fraud” written all over it.

Exact same thing with me...email message obscured the first letter of a password of mine...password was one I used on a bunch of sites that didn't involve any sensitive info, sites like online newspapers and magazines that you had to have a login for, even if free. Many of those sites got hacked over the years.
