While the keto diet can help you lose weight, it also has a ton of weird side effects, like the keto flu, diarrhea, and keto breath. Now, theres apparently another one to add to that list: keto rashand it sounds even worse than walking around with breath that smells like acetone.
What is the keto rash?
The keto rasha.k.a. prurigo pigmentosais an uncommon inflammatory disease thats often characterized by red, itchy bumps on the neck, back, and stomach, according to a literature review on the condition in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology.
While the rashs exact cause is unknown, it can be associated with ketosis (the state during which your body burns fat for fuel instead of carbsand the namesake of the keto diet). Some people are also more likely to develop the rash than othersits actually seen most often in Asian women in their twenties and thirties, according to the same literature review.
What exactly does the keto rash look like?
The keto rash is actually often mistaken for eczema, says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital, showing up as itchy, red, raised bumps on your neck, arms, armpits, chest, and back. Over time, the rashs bumps can become brown or pigmented, he adds.
How can the keto diet cause the keto rash?
The keto diet doesnt necessarily cause the rashit has just been linked to people who are in a state of ketosis, which can cause changes in your gut, says Zeichner.
The thought is that an alteration of the gut microbiomea.k.a. the collection of normal bacteria living in our gutcauses inflammation throughout the body leading to an immune response in our skin and the development of this rash, says Zeichner.

I do no wheat, no dairy basically. Works.
The diet was originally developed to treat epilepsy.

“Several studies have shown that the ketogenic diet does reduce or prevent seizures in many children whose seizures could not be controlled by medications.
Over half of children who go on the diet have at least a 50% reduction in the number of their seizures.
Some children, usually 10-15%, even become seizure-free.”
I never know when I am getting evicted.
Doctor OZ was just praising this diet extensively on his show yesterday.
That doesn't mean that a constant state of ketosis is optimal for healthy people. Someone pointed out that the difference between ketoacidosis and ketosis is like the difference between alcohol poisoning and a light buzz - well, being in a constant state of a light alcohol buzz isn't a good thing either.
Its not strange at all - its a meat/nut/greens diet similar to what our ancestors ate before developing wheat and starch crops.
Thanks to our advancements in agriculture weve made our wheat, corn and rice super energized and easily digested - these get broken down immediately into sugar in our system and, if not quickly burned off, get stored as fat by the body. Its very easy in this society to overeat these items (remember the old food pyramid) which is why were all growing so fat. (Lack of movement is helping there too)
Keto, as Atkins proposed it, was only meant to be a temporary diet until the fat could be burned off and then those items could be reintroduced sparingly.
Theres also speculation that theres something in the refined grains thats harmful to the systems of some people which is why they some benefits when switching to an all meat diet. (Whether a genetic issue, or how the grains have been hybridized or possibly something with the pesticides used on the crops)
Nice Cart! (Creating memories! “My daddy put me in a shopping cart and we took a trip on a major urban highway!”)
I.W.Guy! Happy to see the Safety Harness on your personal page! (See reason above.)
Was the shopping trip “Keto”?
There is one way to lose weight. Take in fewer calories than you expend.
Asians? I’ll bet this is related to how some asians metabolize alchohol. I had an asian friend who would turn bright red when he drank, and smell of fruits..
Who wants a kid’s butt in their food cart?
Monsanto.
Other than lose weight, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, lower blood sugar and A1c, improve blood work results overall, and not be hungry all the time, the results EVERYONE that I know who went on the diet has had, I cant understand why anyone would be on it. After all we have the USDA recommendations that have virtually eliminated obesity in America, why do Keto?
The issue may be the quality of the fats being consumed. There isn’t a mayonnaise available, for example, that isn’t based on soybean oil. Soybean oils cause inflammation. Fat from dairy tends to cause inflammation.
Fats from avocado, beef, chicken don’t. There is fat and there is fat. This is a pretty skillful bit of non-scientific speculation.
Hydrogenated fat is definitely a no-no, for example. Transfat is a no-no.
Carbohydrate? Most assuredly a problem, and the body runs just fine on Ketone. Buddy of mine from the Army has a body fat percentage under 10 percent and was pre-diabetic. Keto shut that down right now.
My son is a type 1 diabetic and ketoacidosis is definitely bad. It’s when the body starts dumping its fluids in an attempt to flush excess glucose out of the body. Fat cells dump their ketones along with water and the effect is a vicious cycle that leads to organ failure.
Interesting that you can run your shopping cart all the way home and back. However, why in heck is the auto traffic using only one side of that bridge?
What form of IF do you do? I’m considering it for the New Year, as the protein sparing modified fast takes tremendous effort. Zig-zag works for me if I can do heavy lifting in concert with it, but logistics and my work schedule make that difficult to do.
“That’s using the ol’ bean!”
Oversimplified. The timing and macronutrient profile (% of fat-carbs-protein) affect both the gut biome (absorption and production of fatty acids), and the body’s hormonal response (do I burn this incoming food or just store it conveniently on my ads?)
If you eat too few calories, the body ramps down the entire metabolism in response.

(Snip) "All of this can be avoided by cycling in and out of nutritional ketosis, basically going through a one-day-per-week fast and one or two days a week of feasting, where you eat double or quadruple the amount of net carbs.
Your body is designed to have the metabolic flexibility to use both glucose and fat for fuel. The problem is, most people lack the ability to burn fat. This metabolic inflexibility is the direct result of eating a high-carb diet for a long period of time.
As a result, they struggle with weight issues and poor health. Even if they are not overweight they may be "skinny fat" with loads of excess dangerous visceral body fat. Feast-and-famine cycling helps reestablish the metabolic flexibility to burn fat. Another important dietary factor is avoiding late-night eating.
Feeding your body at a time when it needs the least amount of energy will simply result in cellular damage due to the excess production of free radicals. For this reason, I often suggest limiting your eating to breakfast and lunch a "Peak Fasting" strategy that allows you to fast for 16 or more hours each day."
The author's primary point is to use using intermittent fasting to promote mitochondrial repair and weight loss and improve your health. This does not involve a high protein diet & uses small cuts of meat, nuts & more good fats like Olive Oil and coconut oil. Reduce carbs, Eat less for 5 days, more the remaining 2. Mediterranean diet stuff 2 meals a day, and take a day off from eating now and then.
As always people will have to make up their own mind on this. (We also had the "Be overweight and drink coffee and booze" article in the last few days telling us what we wanted to hear!)
Nully not bully.
