There are essential and non-essential federal employees. During a shutdown the non-essential do not report to work while the essential MUST or risk termination. Neither group receives pay while the shutdown is in effect. When it's all settled and everyone gets their back pay, the non-essential group received paid days off while the ones that were required to report for duty got shafted.
Shadenfraude or in some cases, Shadenboner.
I took a job as a front end cashier with Walmart cause I needed a paycheck. There are tons of minimum wage jobs out there right now available.
I wouldn’t advise spending too much on Christmas presents yet. There’s nothing assuring back pay with Trump in charge, at least not at this point.
NEVER in my 50 years of working did I encounter a “nonessential” employee. If you weren’t needed, you were gone. Pffft!! Just like that. Business is brutal.
The fact that the damnable government even has a labor category “nonessential” tells me everything I need to know.
How were they shafted? They worked and they got paid.
How can the gov’t refuse to pay for time worked? Isn’t that illegal, even for the gov’t?
Its true that non-essential employees get paid (on a delayed basis) for doing nothing during the shutdown. Its certainly unfair. However, lots of private sector workers see the good pay, very generous benefits, lots of time off, and job security as being nothing to complain about. A little period of frustration relating to a shut down now and then is but a small annoyance when compared to the many advantages of having a tax payer funded job.
Ive been on both sides. The Feds have a pretty comfortable ride in my opinion.
In this mindset shafted means the employees are eventually getting paid for days that you worked. Thats not shafted. Shafted is the American people who paid the government employees who sat home and did nothing.
Theres a mindset in government work that its not fair unless everyone gets the goodies. Annual raises and step increases based solely off longevity, none of that is normal in the private sector. I knew a guy who worked for the same pay for 25 years straight, no raise at all in that time for cost of living or longevity. He wasnt a bright guy for staying there that long, but there arent a bunch of rocket surgeons filing paperwork in a government office either. What is actually fair is when the public gets the value they pay for out of the government.
I got a lot of empathy for federal workers, many of them do important things and get lumped into the negative stereotypes, but they simply get conditioned to look at labor differently than the rest of the workforce.
You got shafted because you didn’t get time off with pay?
And you get a generous government employee retirement plan that private industry doesn’t generally offer any more?
Wow. You’re a victim!
You were paid correct??? So what you are saying is the non essential group were paid for not working AND you being in the essential group were paid for working, so you think you got the shaft because you did not receive a paid vacation???? You do REMEMBER that taxpayers pay your salary correct, WHY do you feel taxpayers should give you a paid vacation when WE already give you a job with some of the BEST benefits anyone could ask for!!! SORRY you feel shafted but I live in CA. and I feel shafted EVERY DAMN DAY because my state has been overrun with illegal immigrants that have changed the ENTIRE culture of my state!!!!
Well, IF you are considered ESSENTIAL, thank your lucky stars.
I think those who are considered NON-Essential will be getting alot of layoff slips in 2019.
By your own admission, there are lots of NON-ESSENTIAL workers there.
WHY? Did you ever ask yourself that?
Private business owners cannot afford to have NON-ESSENTIAL workers. WHY should the taxpayers be stuck with the bill for such at the FEDERAL level?
Are you able to connect the dots?
Every shutdown in recent memory, employees were given back pay. I think the ones that are negatively impacted are contractors working in government agencies but not actual GS employees.
Then be grateful. You could be facing a lay off, which you aren’t.
Then you would have an educated opinion about federal employee unions, which I oppose. You ?
I don't know. Why do restaurants have waiters and cashiers?
The cook can do all of those jobs.
Maybe the federal employees - 99+% Democrat socialists - might become less so if they Didnt get back pay when Schumer/Pelosis antics are over.
Thatd also solve your problem of feeling shafted because you are considered essential and thus dont get extra free paid vacation...
In the last several shutdowns this has happened. But it's not required for laid off workers to receive back pay. It requires a special action of Congress and the President to sign off to restore back pay.
These shutdowns are always hardest on low level employees who don't make very much and live from paycheck to paycheck.
