Box Office: “Mary Poppins Returns” with Disappointing Opening Night...Nasty New York Times Review
Showbiz411.com ^ | 12/20/2018 | Roger Friedman

“Mary Poppins Returns” scored only $4.7 million on its opening day yesterday. Projections for the five day weekend are $35 million, which is very low. Twice that should have been the result.

Disney has a problem on its hands because it planned sequels and has invested a lot in retooling its most prized film. Rob Marshall did an excellent job, and Emily Blunt is wonderful, frankly. The animation is terrific. Surprise appearances from Meryl Streep, Dick van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury just add to the thrill of it all. Lin Manuel Miranda is quite terrific, too.

But Rotten Tomatoes has “Mary Poppins Returns” at a low 78. The New York Times’s Manohla Dargis didn’t help, eviscerating the new movie in her review. The headline was a killer–

“A Truck Full of Sugar Can’t Make This Uplift Go Down”

Yikes.

Remember the movie “Saving Mr. Banks”? Somehow I think P.L. Travers, who wrote “Mary Poppins,” has jinxed this movie. Or maybe it’s just bad karma. Disney held a “private” opening of the movie in New York this week, didn’t invite press, and staged the whole thing at a not very glamorous theater. It was a sign of bad things to come.

Further proof of the utter dearth of ideas in what was once the entertainment capital of the world.

Another lousy flick....

Maybe, maybe not. This is a "family" film; and, I think most critics give those type of films low ratings. They seem to be actively against any type of film that shows a loving family, or just nice, normal people.

I would like to see what audiences think of it, before I decide if it is a "lousy" film. Critics really can't be trusted anymore.

Anything to prevent reporting that Streep has kept viewers (including myself) away.

Would have otherwise loved to have seen Dick Van Dyke again.

I enjoyed the original, but that was over half a century ago.
Maybe the world has changed too much to embrace a story like this. England was seen differently back then, as a far bigger influence compared to right now.

Some kids may be too hooked on their latest CGI-Super Hero movies; wall to wall high impact, fast paced, light on dialog and character development, gratuitously violent and raunchy where it isn’t necessary. Even current movies about Alvin and The Chipmunks has scenes of flirting and arousal. Innocent looking, yes, but distracting from the story.

FWIW, Rex Reed said it surpassed the original.

Meryl Streep? Has the #MeToo movement decided finally to uphold their purported values and boycott against those that prostituted themselves in Hollywood?

My wife and I took our 1st grade granddaughter to the 10am show this morning. We all enjoyed it, music & story. Both Dick Van Dyke & Angela Lansbury sparkled in their roles. Emily Blunt’s Mary Poppins didn’t lose a step from Julie Andrew’s performance. The children were also well-cast & made a believable transition from doubters to converts of the impossible becoming possible.

Okay, I just went to Rotten Tomatoes and they give the film a 78% from the critics and the audience gave ita 71%. 60% is considered a "Ripe Tomato" (a good movie).

I noticed that the "critic" who was lampooning this film is writing for the NY Times. Perhaps we should "consider the source"?

I hesitate to see it because of Lin-Manuel Miranda. That leftist wouldn’t want my conservative money.

I have no opinion on a film I haven't seen.

Haven't seen it and I won't be paying to see it.

I might watch it if it pops up on broadcast tv in a few years.

I do have a problem with Lin Manuel Miranda.

He's a Hispanic supremacists who hates White Americans.

He blamed Trump for the problems in Puerto Rico after the hurricane among other things.

I don't like him at all.

A Rotten tomatoes score of 78 is not low.

“I would like to see what audiences think of it.....” They already have. No numbers anywhere near what they expected. And family animated flicks had been doing quite well over the past 10 years. But the audience is changing as they would rather see Marvel than Poppins. No one was blown up in Poppins.

Given that, I’d say he’s a cinch to be nominated for an Oscar.
